I missed my calling due to my wife not wanting to move to Delaware for the last 4 yrs, and now prices are through the roof, and inventory is low….I was originally wanting to move to Milton/Milford/Lewes area, but not many homes for sale in those areas….I saw much better prices in the Dover area, but I know very little about life in Dover…..The move to Delaware is the cost of living, and most of all the beaches…I’m very active outdoors, and my family loves the beach as I do….I’m retired…..Does Dover sound like a good fit?….Thanks, Jim

It's a longish drive from Dover to the beach.

Not for a beach lover in the summer. Dover is a 40 minute ride in the winter and the truth is that could easily double in the summer.

I have been living just outside Dover for a little over 5 years now. I love the beach and lived exactly 1 mile from my local beach before I moved, in addition to having a state park pass and driving to state parks with beaches. I thought I would miss having a beach close by, but I have adjusted. I visit the beach areas before and after the summer season. I live in a community with a swimming pool and stay home most of the summer. I made several trips to Delaware looking at different areas and decided Dover was best for me - great shopping options, all needed services within a few miles, an Amish area with my favorite grocery store fewer than 10 miles away, a huge senior center with a huge gym and indoor swimming pool nearby, 2 casinos/race tracks and so many beautiful little towns to visit (I like photography). In addition, 2 national wildlife preserves, popular with bird-watchers. Dover has a very large public library, built several years ago, with a good selection of major daily newspapers, magazines, DVD’s to borrow, movies shown every week, and programming for children. My neighbors take visiting grand-children there. In the summer there is a concert series in a park one evening a week and another concert series on the Dover Green. I am never without something to do. My property taxes are a fraction of what they were before I moved. Prices have gone up in my community, as everywhere else in this area. Dover was a good move for me. I wish you luck. Curious - did your wife change her mind about moving here?

Thanks for the replies….The beach was one of the main reasons for the move, and the biggest reason was the cost of living…People seem to be more at ease in Delaware in general…All the things to do in Dover is a big plus, but the beach even in NY calls out to me…I love getting out to fish, and I also do metal detecting on the beach…I’ll really have to spend some time in the Dover area to see how things work there…The wide open area’s around Milford/Milton area reminds me of upstate NY…and with the beach so close it’s hard to resist…..The lack of inventory, and the prices make the area prohibitive now…. I feel like life has passed me by staying in NY for too long..I’m WAY over due for a change…Thanks again for all who responded

If you don't want to drive south in traffic, to the downstate beach extravaganza, here's a solution:
Bowers Beach...https://www.visitdelawarevillages.co.../bowers-beach/

I live in a small town bordering the City of Dover, and Bowers Beach suits me! First of all, it takes me 15 minutes to get to Bowers Beach which is on the Delaware Bay, and there's a dynamic seafood restaurant, second to none. Check it out!

RDLR, You raise a great point. To this former LI'er, it isn't a beach if there isn't an ocean. I have had the benefit of both and the bay doesn't do it for me, BUT, it might just do the trick for others.

Don’t feel that life has passed you by. For various reasons, I had to delay moving here from Conn. A neighbor told me I was “too old to move” and would never adjust to a new area. I moved, adjusted very well and would never go back to Conn. The first time I visited here in 2008, I knew this was my place, just had to delay the move for several years.

Yes, there's quite a difference between beach and bay. One big difference is, do you prefer "quiet" or "busy".
I enjoy "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" and watching the fishing boats unload their catches of the day, while my fresh fish dinner is prepared.

I like both the quiet “dock of the bay” and also the busy….I’m more interested in “easy”….Busy is generally too many people, too much money, and too much time and traffic to get to….I’m aware that once you move and get a schedule down, life becomes easier…”when in rome, do as the romans do”
Hopefully in time I won’t even mutter the words NY….Thank you all for your insight !!
