My husband and I currently live in Austin but moving to the Plano area. I'm trying to research online best areas for us but having a hard time so I figured I'd ask for suggestions. We are in our 30s, no kids and we really like older houses with character - also enjoy walking/biking, coffee shops, art etc. His work will be in the corporate area by Pepsi, JCPenny, Toyota. What neighborhoods would be best? I like the feel of The Colony homes but it seems like there isn't much to do - just homes and schools. It seems like north Plano has a pocket of older homes with greenbelt trails, is that considered an alright area?

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Honestly, Dallas city proper is going to be way more ideal for your lifestyle and preferences than Plano, especially the North Oak Cliff section. But the problem here would be a lengthy commute and housing costs. There's going to be sacrifices here somewhere. What's your budget like? How long of a commute are you willing to endure?

I would like to suggest the area around downtown Plano. There are older homes in that area, the DART light rail has a station, there is not only Haggard Park, but downtown now has a stage with frequent live music. There is an indie coffee shop downtown as well as shopping, non-chain restaurants, and pubs. An old house is being renovated as an Arts Centre. Courtyard Theater is there for performing arts. Last year, Downtown Plano received a great places award from the American Planning Association for best neighborhood.

Plans ahead for historic Saigling House, ArtCentre of Plano | Plano | Dallas News

What's your budget and how long (minutes) do you want to drive to/from work? Not a lot with character near Legacy cooridor but if you have a big enough budget and/or commute tolerance you can find what you're looking for.

2nd vote for this suggestion.

From 15th st in downtown Plano up to Bob Woodruff Park would likely check off all of your boxes.

This simply does not exist in Plano. You either need to move in to somewhere like Lakewood or further out to like McKinney.

Check out old downtown in East Plano. It's very underrated, affordable, hip and happening. There is always something going on there. With all the shops, restaurants, Courtyard theater, farmer's market, outdoor stage, gallery, train museum, park, DART train/bus, etc., it's as hip as you can get in a Collin County suburb and evolving by the minute. You'll be closer to all the interesting things in Richardson and Dallas as well. If you decide to go parenting route then you'll be in Plano ISD.

15th street is fine, but it's a solid 30 minutes from far west (20 mins with no traffic), so downtown Dallas is realistically as close as 15th street in Plano. Lakewood, Oak Cliff, and some of the other places mentioned are also on the east side of 75 so distance is not your friend in this situation.

Honestly, I'd live closer to Legacy West -it's new right now but will be decently hip in a decade.

Have you made that commute from Oak Cliff to West Plano? Not gonna happen in less than 30 minutes unless maybe at 2 in the morning. I know, I lived in North Oak Cliff 20 years ago and 30 minutes up DNT to George Bush (not then a toll road) was only going to happen if you could find a time with no traffic. Today? Fer-git-aboutit.

I can make it from far east Plano to Willow Bend area in less than 30 minutes, during rush hour, if I stay off of George Bush Tollway to north bound DNT (that ramp is a killer during all of this construction).

West Plano is OK, but I only see Legacy Town Center as being hip, ever.
