Just heard on my radio Dr. Nathan Rabb and a person called in about prevention of alzheimers and Dr. Rabb (he has sites) went right to coconut oil. Here is one link and it also connects the use of statins by so many and reduction of cholesterol needed by the brain.
"Dr" Rabb is a naturopath....in other words, NOT a doctor but a quack....his "opinions' about Alzheimer's and possible benefits from coconut oil are worthless...
Lowering cholesterol with statins in a bid to prevent cardiovascular (CV) disease in older people is a ‘total waste of time’, according to the results of a controversial new study.

Apparently a lot of posters are very selective readers. I attempted to access echo's study and got the sign-in prompt too, so when I read Mikala's article, she neglected to mention this important contradictory comment written by an expert in her posted article:
"Professor Colin Baigent, an epidemiologist at Oxford University, said the new study had “serious weaknesses and, as a consequence, has reached completely the wrong conclusion”, the Telegraph reports."

No, it's just after attempting to help by finding a readable article, I tried to skim through it, but there was so much click bait and video all over the article it was taking forever and I gave up.
I don't know why they don't put that type of disclaimer in the first paragraph.

I have been reading a lot on statins lately and am not liking what I read.
Has anyone stopped taking statins?
Going to talk this over with my Doc.
statins did horrid things to this member. Come to find out it was a thyroid problem. MD had numbers all wrong. A lecense to practice medicine does not mean the MD knows the facts. Much easier to write a script...GRRRRRRR.
It seems that there are statins, and then there are statins. Some are a problem, others not so much. I always research new medications before taking them, and two doctors tried to put me on statins that I knew from going over the drug studies were not recommended for me due to some preexisting medical conditions. Neither doctor would budge, so I switched to a third doctor and have been on the one the one I wanted to take (Rosuvastatin).
It's been kicking my butt w/ diarrhea, but if it lowers my cholesterol to a safe limit, it's worth it. I go back next month for a 3 mo check up, and we'll see how my labs come out. Many of the other statins can cause tinnitus too, and since I already have that, taking any of those were off the table, something my first two doctors didn't seem to appreciate, but then they don't have tinnitus, I do. At 72, I'm not worried about the risk of Alzheimer, something besides that will probably kill me :>)
The study that stated that any medication that might lower cardiovascular disease in older adults by using statins is a total waste of time is a smoking gun of dangerous nonsense. I live in a senior community, and there have been so many strokes in our community this year it's crazy. Statins alone are not usually prescribed to address cardiovascular disease anyway, they're usually prescribed to address cholesterol problems (in older adults). High cholesterol levels are a killer, as they often lead to heart attacks and strokes. Our health has to be looked at holistically, ALL parts of it need to be addressed, and any medications we use need to be fact checked to make sure they don't cause other health problems.

I was on Rosuvastatin for several years and my FBS gradually crept up to pre-diabetic level. Then I remembered this was a side effect. After switching statins my FBS went from 117 to 84.
So keep an eye on your labs.
