Hello,

I am thinking of moving to CC or somewhere in that general area to retire next year. I currently live in Buckeye Arizona I am originally from Santa Clara California. I do not mind the heat here, but I miss the beach so much, and I do like Texas much better than California. i am really into outdoor activities, water sports etc.
But of course I do worry about the hurricanes and crime in the area, as I am a single woman. Is Corpus a good area to retire or would anyone suggest areas that are close enough to the beach to be able to get there within a half an hour or so. I don't mind a smaller town vibe as long as a bigger town is with in a half an hour. I will be in town in a few weeks so if anyone has an suggestions I would appreciate it so I can look when I am there.. Thanks much

Rockport, Portland, Port Aransas, and look south around South Padre Island as well (the ocean is a little nicer the further south you go)

Rockport is about 40 min from Corpus. Port Aransas is 30 minutes in Winter but an hour in Summer. North Padre Island(part of Corpus) is about 10-15 min from the mainland. All are low crime. North Padre has the benefit of 24 hour EMS from the two CC fire stations on Padre and Mustang Island. They are the lowest call volume stations in the city so have extremely short response times even by large city standards. Rockport has had trouble keeping an even low capability ER. Honestly at your age EMS coverage is vastly more important for longevity than crime is. Violent crime against seniors is very very low everywhere.

Both North Padre and Rockport have large senior retirement contingents. Rockport is more artsy and NP is more drinking/partying. Port Aransas prices out most non wealthy seniors at this point.

The Ocean Drive to Alameda corridor along the Bay in Corpus Christi itself is also an option. It has a broader access to cultural, medical, and shopping and a bit different set of outdoor activities but is still close to the beach. Downtown for example has a nice bay beach.

Hurricanes hit our area about as frequently as they hit New York or Boston. When they do hit mainland is the safest place(it's why the port is built where it is and Corpus is the large city in the region). You'll notice a 35 foot "cliff" on Ocean Drive that protects against storm surge.

Generally on activities best places are:
Culture/Concerts: CC
Sailing: CC (world class)
Windsurfing/kiteboarding: CC/NP (world class)
Birding/Nature Parks: CC/Rockport
Arts: Rockport/CC
Offshore fishing: Port A
Laguna/Flats Fishing: NP/Rockport
Beach Camping: NP
Busy Beach lots of people: Port A
Surfing: Port A/NP
Shopping: CC then Port A

If you post a housing budget that would help narrow things down a bit. Do keep in mind that windstorm insurance is not cheap.

Default budget

I would like to keep it under 200k.
Even less if I can. I just need a small place, but with a larger yard for dogs, and boat if my sons comes to visit and if i still have my travel trailer somewhere to park it. House size just looking for 2br 1.5 bath

If you are ok with being a bit further from the beach you can also look into George West, Three Rivers, Beeville, Sinton, etc.

In that budget range I'd look at the neighborhoods off Waldron road in Flour Bluff and the McArdle, Staples, Airline, and Everhart corridors north of SPID. Also between Alameda and Staples further towards Downtown. Basically you have a very narrow path to thread for post war neighborhoods(small houses) that have not gentrified.

Some examples:

200k is now below our median sales price so near the water is going to be tough if it isn't a small condo with no yard.
