Portobello America Inc., a tile and ceramics manufacturer, has indicated construction will begin in August in Baxter.

Baxter Mayor John Martin met last week with architects, and said the manufacturer has indicated they will break ground in August.

Portobello announced in Decemeber of 2018 that it will invest approximately $150 million to locate its U.S. headquarters and first U.S. production facility in Baxter, but officials said COVID and environmental issues delayed the start of the project, which is expected to create 220 jobs in Putnam County.

They almost made it. Construction didn't begin in August, but it did begin this past week. While there's not been an official groundbreaking, Blaine Construction out of Knoxville has gotten started with site prep. Even yesterday, a Saturday, there was a slew of earth-moving equipment on site working feverishly. This one is going to be fun watching go up right off I-40 at the Baxter exit (280).

Will they be able to get people to work, when they are ready to produce goods?

The plant isn't opening next week. It'll be a good 12-18 months before they're able to start production. Hopefully, by then the labor market will have returned to a sense of normalcy.

There's more info in this week's UCBJ about the plant. The facility will be just under a million square feet, of which 30,000 square feet will be offices. Not only is this a manufacturing facility, it will be Portobello's North American headquarters, so I assume of the planned 220 workers there will be quite a few executive and upper management positions. They plan on opening in April 2023.

Even though production isn't going to start for over a year, Portobello is already starting to hire engineers and other staff, up to 100 before the factory even opens. Some of the perks of being a new hire: the company will send some of these employees to Italy to train on equipment, and others will be sent to Brazil where Portobello is headquartered and has sister operations.

In other news, construction should start soon on the new road which will connect Portobello to the Baxter I-40 exit now that the state has completed purchasing the necessary right of way.

They already have the earthwork for the main part of the factory complete? That was insanely fast. It felt like forever for them to complete the primary earth work on the Food City.

Default Employment for Portobello

How do you know they are already hiring? I have emailed several times to find out when they will begin the process but have not heard anything back.

I thought James Durbin's statement on why Portobello chose Baxter Tennessee for its new factory was very interesting.

Quote:
James (Jed) Durbin, Portobello America’s VP of Manufacturing & Outsourcing, was asked why his firm decided upon the location of Baxter, Tennessee for its new factory (which is now under construction). His response was, “Logistically, Baxter is very advantageous to about 80% of the US population related to transit time and mileage to customers. Baxter is also centrally located to where top-grade raw materials required for our production process can easily be sourced and procured.

There was an article in the Herald-Citizen that they were interviewing engineers, engineering managers and business managers and that those people hired would be sent to Italy and Brazil for training.
