One of the most popular events that brings people downtown will take place tomorrow, Friday October 26. The annual Cooking on the Square starts at 11am and ends at 1:30. Proceeds go towards funding Putnam County Habitat for Humanity. Those who haven't already purchased tickets may purchase a ticket for $25 at one of the gates around the courthouse square which will give you a handcrafted bowl made by area potters. Dozens of teams will have Cajun food and desserts. Last year's event raised $80,000.

From last year's event:

Renovations of the old antique store on Broad have been completed, and it's reopened as a pretty swank clothing store for women. No word yet on what's happening to the old alterations shop next door, but it's coming along nicely, too. I took this picture on Thanksgiving day when no one was out and about. Yesterday (Black Friday) was a madhouse.

Dogwood Park downtown has several things going on for the holidays. There's a free Christmas carousel for kids accessible behind the Cookeville History Museum, pictures with Santa inside the Santa House, and nightly light shows set to music with the 40-foot tall Christmas tree. The light/music shows last 15 minutes and start on the hour at 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9pm.

Here's a video on Facebook of the official lighting ceremony of the Christmas tree:

Couple things about the beige antique shop across from World Foods. In the 1990s it was a furniture store and many years before that I think it was a big hardware store.

A doctor building a new office complex downtown has agreed to open her parking lot to the public during non-business hours: evenings after 5pm, weekends, and holidays. Locate catty-corner from India Palace and directly across from the city gas department, this should definitely help the parking situation on the Westside, at least until the new parking garage is built.

Another brewpub is coming to downtown's WestSide. NoWhere Bar and Grill is taking over the space on the corner of Cedar and 1st which puts it right across the street from Red Silo Brewery in one direction and 37 Cedar in the other direction. That block is becoming very popular with restaurants: 37 Cedar, Father Tom's Pub, India Palace, Red Silo, World Foods, and a soon-to-be-opened cheesecake store are all within about 50 feet of this new place.

Their Facebook page says they're training the new employees and hope to open within "a few days."

I think that should be "brew pub;" as the first thing you see on their FB homepage is a Bud Light. Dilly, dilly! Looks like a smoking establishment, perhaps the Westside needs a smoking bar, or will ultimately reject a smoking bar. Nice looking interior.
