After looking closely at the map again just now, there are two other problems to deal with in that area. Britt Road and Woodrow Road both have an at-grade access to US-74 just west of Boardman. They will need to be closed off as well.

2 repaving projects in Brunswick and Pender counties will begin next week.

Brunswick County: US-17 between Old Ocean Highway and Bolivia. Work should be complete by the end of the year.

Pender County: I-40 between Exit 388 and Exit 408. Work is expected to be complete by next summer.

Had two close calls on NC-43 between New Bern and Greenville yesterday. It is almost always a harrowing trip with all sorts of dangerous driving predicaments common.

Is there any plan to make/improve this gauntlet of death four lanes? Better yet, does anyone have any insight as to why it was not upgraded to four lane years ago?

Thanks in advance.

The Craven side of this is in this document. To my knowledge nothing this is long range and nothing right now is being developed or funded.

Highway 17 will be extended from US 70 to Highway 17 south of Vanceboro.

Business 17 will be widened from Bridgeton North to the Craven County line.

Highway 43 will see improvements within Vanceboro and just north at the Pitt County line. I would love to see a connector from 43 near the Pitt line to the widened Highway 17 so that 43 connects north of Vanceboro instead of South. This would in effect be a Vanceboro bypass.

Pitt County appears to be in the process of updating its Comprehensive Transportation Plan. The 2006 version shows Highway 43 to be a divided freeway from Hollywood Xroads to the Craven County line. NC DOT has been planning on doing the widening from Bells Fork to Hollywood Xroads, but its part of a list of about 5 other widening projects in Greenville that are backlogged.

There is a Highway 43 Land Use Plan in place

NC could make that road a little safer by adding rumble strips down the middle of the lanes. They've done it on other NC routes in NC and that road seems like a good candidate for that simple road improvement. They could also add a little bit more crown to the road. That would help keep cars to the right side of the centerline.

There is some inherently evil about that road. Usually, when you hear about a head-on collision in Pitt County, it's on NC43 South.

I must admit for the first time in my 50 years of driving, a couple of weeks ago, I drifted over the first of a double yellow while a car was coming from the other direction on NC 43. I quickly noticed what I was doing and steered right to get off of the center line. I don't know what I was thinking to take my mind off of what it should have been paying attention to but it scared the bejesus out of me.

Thanks for the responses. “Inherently evil” pretty much sums it up!

NCDOT awarded a contract to repave a 5-mile stretch of I-140 near Leland between US-17 and US-74. Work can begin early next year, and completion is expected by summer 2025.
