La Niña winters are very dry. BC and Alberta both had more overwintering fires than average. Northeast BC was in a level of drought that this winter has done nothing to relieve.
Throw in a few days of high winds and fires are inevitable.
There are currently 122 wildfires burning in BC. There are many more in other provinces, so buckle up, it's going to be a smokey summer.
