It sounds funny, but honestly I don't think I ever want to go back. I'm probably on their "fruit smuggler" list and will be detained every time I try to enter.

An RV couple did a video on that. The boarder control let them stand there and eat the oranges while they filmed. The guy is funny, great voice and can pretty much win anyone over. It was too funny.
Fruit is a big no no but I am surprised that since you admitted it they didn't just confiscate it. Returning this year the guy ahead of us had wood and fish. Fish is ok but it has to be frozen I think, not sure. Going across I had a box and a half of wine which was pretty much more than your supposed to have without paying a tax but we just told them what we had and I don't know if the guy understood the size of the box but he just said ok. It is hit or miss with these guys.
