Related information: Montante gets to work on Niagara Falls rehab project

The redevelopment has begun at three century-old buildings in Niagara Falls that sit almost directly across from the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino.

Crews from TM Montante Development have started work on the $5 million project that will see the structures at 7th and Niagara Streets transformed into a mixed-use complex. The project — named 616 Niagara — will be anchored by 17 market-rate apartments and offices for the Niagara Global Tourism Initiative and TReC, the first co-working and incubator facility in the City of Niagara Falls. Also planned is a ground floor corner café.

“Vacant structures will become vibrant again,” said Chris Campos, TM Montante Development president.

Both the global tourism institute and TReC are affiliates of Niagara University, a move that increases its presence in the heart of Niagara Falls.

“TReC will serve as a link between the local community and entrepreneurial opportunities in Niagara Falls,” said Patrick Whalen, global tourism institute executive director.

The Montante project received a $750,000 grant from the WNY Regional Economic Development Capital Fund as well as a $100,000 grant from National Grid’s Main Street Revitalization Program. The Niagara Global Tourism Institute also received a $176,000 grant from the Niagara Falls Tourism Target Zone Program which is administered through the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency.

I think a lot of this news is misleading. Developers are taking advantage of generous grants and incentives to convert vacant structures into apartments and other mixed use developments. We have a business in Niagara Falls and the vast majority of the patrons are on some form of public assistance. We survive by having many of them and our business is located outside the city limits near the outlet mall. Its far and away our least profitable location. The city looks like a war zone even though there is some activity near the Falls, like turning the bankrupt mall into the culinary school. We take visitors that can't cross into Canada around the USA side to Goat Island and downtown and although slightly improved still looks like a war zone. I remember the Falls from the 1950's when it was a vibrant area like downtown Buffalo used to be. Most of the action comes from State assistance, the Casino is self contained with people parking, going to the Casino and leaving.

A lot of development is state infused in many places and involve conventions of vacant/older structures. That isn’t anything new in many “legacy” cities.

If you don’t mind me asking(especially given the questions you’ve asked me), what kind of business or industry are you referring to?
