The empty set house sits on a cattle ranch. The family uses it for storage. These movies along with Paramount's "Yellowstone" are a bummer for locals. Inspiring many to come play dress up on their very own 5 acre "ranch". One local realtor advertises she's a "Montana luxury ranchette lifestyle expert". She's a new California (beach city) transplant.

Depends on which stupid movie. A River Runs Through It was filmed in Livingston on Mill Creek and the Gallatin River south of Bozeman. The book was written about the Blackfoot River over by Missoula, but it was too developed for being the backdrop of a 1920s movie.

Several of my family members were bit players in that one.
Rancho Delux was filmed in Livingston, one of my cousins still gets a residual check from that once in a while. Horse Whisperer was filmed in Big Timber.

You may be thinking of Heavens Gate that was supposed to be Montana but was shot in Canada.

Correct on the others but Heavens Gate was filmed around Kalispell although the story takes place in Johnson County, Wyoming. Either way, it seems that people see these movies then visit on vacation and then make a move. Half of them move back when they realize people aren't on a permanent vacation. Or you get the rich ones that don't seem to need to work or work from home.

That's cool your family has history in the area. I've been a long time reader here and wondered why you settled so far from Livingston? And did you and NDak 15 attend highschool in Bozeman together? Seems like there's history between you two.... Anyway, I've enjoyed your stories. Silvertip you really need to get this stuff written down in a book, guide or "how to" manual for MT living/surviving/hunting/fishing/foraging/ranching etc. I know others here will agree with me.

I went to college in Bozeman. The only history I have witn Silvertip is that we are polar opposites and disagree on most things. I don't mean that as a dig, just the way it us.

Where I live now is only 90 miles from Livingston. Unless you cater to the rich and shameless, there aren't a lot of jobs in Livingston that pay enough to live there. My "career" in Helena came from going through my degree and doing work-study that became a full time job at graduation.

My family ranch near Bozeman became surrounded by developments and the taxes became more than what revenue we could create from the land, so my parents sold the home place but kept the summer pasture near Livingston. It's nice land, but you can't get in there most of the year due to snow.

I have written a couple of books, but they're basically technical manuals on laws I used to deal with.
Doris Whithorn was a historian that wrote several books on the Paradise Valley south of Livingston. She ran the Wan-I-Gan on the Yellowstone River near Emmigrant. She's a fantastic reference for life and the old families in that area. My uncle used to say she was the most dangerous person in the valley because she knew where all the bodies were burried.

I didn't go to school with NDak, we just disagree on pretty much everything.

I suggest you write a homesteading/survival etc book. While searching random topics in old MT threads, I frequently find interesting stories combined with advice/knowledge you've offered. These posts are invaluable and entertaining. Consider writing a biography/ "how to" manual covering the broad range of topics you've discussed here. I've stumbled across your old posts about log cabin building, fiddle playing, gardening, foraging, livestock, cooking. If I knew about and had done all the things you've talked about here, I'd chronicle it in a book or journal.

This will primarily be used as a seasonal summer home but are these outlying areas outside Bozeman completely inaccessible in the winter for driving into town? Are you snowed in for weeks? Are there any amenities like high speed internet through WISPS or LTE or you all limited to satellite?

The real estate listings within Bozeman have been completely underwhelming. Paying half a million for a crappy tract home with no view is not interesting to me. Thus, why we are looking outside the city for more rural. We want mountains, trees, and no view of anybody else. It's an escape property.

OP, your question got kind of lost in our chat about Montana movie locations! I just wanted to bring it back up, and tell you not to be discouraged by the cold winds of realism. I'm sure you'll be able to find a way to spend summers in Montana, close to mountains and trees, but I would suggest that you look for bare land and spread your search to include North Idaho, and possibly consider RV'ing (see my earlier post).

Good luck!

Anyone have thoughts on Bigfork near Lake Flathead? I'm seeing some gorgeous properties there and looks like you get a lot more for your money compared to Bozeman.
