On April 16, the Birmingham Stallions will play the New Jersey Generals, marking the start of the new USFL league in Birmingham.

After much deliberation and investment from local government, the USFL is launching its first full season in the city.

The Magic City is no stranger to hosting a team in an alternative football league. The original USFL, the CFL, the World Football League and the Alliance of American Football have all had franchises in Birmingham, but never has one league played all its games in the city or had corporate backing from FOX.

“The backing of FOX is obviously significant, and no other startup league has had the backing of a company like FOX in the past,” said Edward Hartman, executive vice president of business operations at the USFL. “We also think having the support of Birmingham is unique as well.”

The league sees Birmingham as a city on the rise, one that has nurtured economic and social tailwinds while keeping costs in check, Hartman said.

Local experts are bullish on the league, seeing the model the USFL is adopting as not only different than previous leagues but hopefully a better model for longevity — an issue that has plagued past leagues in Birmingham.

“Resources and the financial backing from one of the largest broadcast media corporations in the world is the difference,” said Gene Hallman, CEO of Bruno Event Team. “The previous ventures were well intended. A lot of people worked hard in those previous ventures, but when you go to the financial foundations, it wasn’t there to the extent it is here now.”

Hallman said that because FOX has an extensive history in professional football broadcasting, it is a natural fit to run a spring league. Also, having a company like FOX should help the new league tackle the initial costs of a new league, which is always an expensive endeavor. Being located in a single city also helps cut costs, which makes Hallman more optimistic for its success.

While sports organizations have recently used “bubbles,” areas of isolation for teams and staff to limit the spread of Covid-19, that isn’t the main reason why USFL is containing the league in a single city. Hartman said protocols will be in place, but USFL players and staff will still be able to enjoy the city.

Economic impact on hotel rooms alone is estimated at $15 million. John Oros, president and CEO of the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, said that around 45,000 hotel room nights are needed for the players, staff and those from FOX.

Oros expects some fans from outside cities and from around the state to use hotel rooms as well.

“Our industry has been so ravaged by the Covid pandemic and this is a shot in the arm. And sports tourism is very important. FOX knows that they know that for a great football state and there’s high interest in football in the state of Alabama,” Oros said. “So, we’re hoping fans are going to come in from out of town buy tickets and spend a weekend here in Birmingham.”

Superb. They practically just finished building it and are already having to juggle resources and worry about scheduling conflicts. That's not the scenario we were promised by the "realistic" critics is it?

i'm eager to see what kind of advertising we'll see during the Super Bowl, which is arguably the biggest television event of every year.

I think they would have at least one commercial spot. Perhaps not during the game, but towards the end or just right after the game is over.

Hope that it’s not late in the game, because this might be a blow out. Lots of TV sets will be clicked off in the middle of the third-quarter. Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s what happens.

USFL playoff, title games will not be played in Birmingham due to scheduling conflict

Welp. You'd think they would have taken that into account. The World Games have only been scheduled for years.

Wonder why they couldn't move the championship games from Protective to Legion Field? I know it's a downgrade in venue niceness, but that at least keeps it in the city.

Isn't Legion Field being used for a few events?
