Highland's School is an excellent independent (private) school. Call and talk with Admissions Director, Judy McDonald. Great School/parental involvement/high standards!

I'm moving to Birmingham because I have accepted a job here. I am a single female and would like a safe area to live.
Thanks

Great news. The town, outside of some isolated pockets, is very safe. There are some questions we have on the first post on this thread. Answer those and we can help you dial in on the right community.

I will be working at the VA Hospital and would like an area 30-45minute commute(car or public transporation), $1000-1200 month(would like a house with 3 br/2 ba) until I can find a home to purchase. I have two children(9 and 15 yrs old girls). I would love to be close to schools and have friendly neighbors.

Well, I'm just running the numbers. At 3.5% interest, a $250,000 home will be roughly $1,122, not including PMI and property taxes. So that's the starting point.

I would suggest Vestavia and Homewood as your best options. You can get a pretty good house for that price, have your kids in an excellent school system, and enjoy a commute less than 30 minutes. Mountain Brook would also be good, but you'd likely need to bump your price a bit to $300-325K. But the schools would likely be worth it.

I think you'll find friendly neighbors wherever. But if you want to make friends more quickly in an established neighborhood, it will be important to reach out to neighbors, get involved in organizations, etc. In that sense, I think Homewood would be a better choice than Mountain Brook, which tends to be a good deal more stratified. However, if you're a doctor, you'll likely get wired into a lot of professional organizations which will provide an automatic way to make friends, etc.

Hope this helps! One last thing. I suggest staying within I-459 in order to have a good commute.
