We have an avocado tree with a circumference of 8 plus feet; however, the fruit isn’t very good. Not sure if it’s a grafted variety, seed avocado or an old type from long ago. Have the Ken Love poster and the profile could be any dozen of the listed types or not. Can we stump this tree and graft a new variety to it?

You would need to wait for a new shoot to appear on the stump, then graft on to it at the appropriate time. Also monitor the stump for other new shoots and either cut them off or also graft on those. In theory this should work, though I’m not sure about it.
My inclination would be to plant a new, grafted tree of a favorite cultivar instead.

If it's a grafted variety it would be pretty obvious by spotting the graft. Varieties grown from seed frequently don't make very good fruit.

I don't have any experience grafting trees but from what I've read that size trunk can be grafted, but it may take somebody who knows the right technique.

It might be easier to just plant a grafted tree.

An experienced grafter could graft several scions onto a stump, with a high percentage of success. I have done it on other trees in the past, with 4-5 grafts along the edges of the stump. This is how a "Weeping Cherry" tree is created.

We cut down a poor-producing avocado tree and about six months later we had two good size shoots growing out of the stump. We just grafted new trees onto those, so I'll hopefully have a new, good producing tree in a year or two. With all the rain we've been getting in Discovery Harbour, everything is growing really well.

I've personally experienced this phenomenon, a good reason IMO not to try it. The shoots were just too weak, and I tried more than once to promote the best looking shoots. They all eventually broke off. Although with my tree all the shoots were growing from the stump, not near it. I believe that's also the way avocado would regrow.

"..If you hope for another full-size tree, you will need to pick the best shoots and remove the others. Select one or two of the tallest shoots that are growing from the ground near the stump, not those growing from the stump. Those sprouting up directly from the stump may not develop a strong enough foundation to become a large tree. Keep cutting back all other shoots until they stop growing..."

thanks, Arktikos. So far we've done it right, although we really didn't know what we were doing.
