The Prineville area has huge data/server farms that take massive amounts of electricity to run - far more than a standard high tech facility would. If Portland could somehow "block electricity", Prineville wouldn't be a server hub with centers for Facebook, Apple and others. They moved there because of the longer winters (keeping a server farm cool is a problem in very hot climates) and because electricity is cheap - and Prineville was willing to cut them tax breaks. They employ relatively few people (I think I read that the Apple facility runs on fewer than 30 people).

The reason Central Oregon doesn't have more high tech software or hardware firms (as opposed to server farms) is that those companies tend to move where there are a lot of similar companies. Bend has some, but hasn;t ticked over to that critical mass that starts to make an area a "hub."

Doesn't google or facebook have a big data center in Prineville?

I know it's not a high tech hub with thousands of jobs available, but there is something there besides Prineville being just a "cowtown".

The longer winters, and in the summer, cool nights and very low humidity, which makes low-cost water evaporation cooling methods very effective during the hot days.

because of the longer winters
May be longer, but they are a lot colder and a lot drier than the Willamette Valley.

I'll take long cold and dry over long mild and wet, most of the time!

u move to centralia you are going to have to stand having your husband spend 5-15 dollars a day at a bikini coffee stand or at least risk it. its a big part of the culture u pthere. u wont find that in bend. prineville area. its. little more wholesome i think. and values oriented. centralia is right on i 5 and close to pdx vancouver and seattle and you get the good and bad from that imo .

Hmm. Bikini coffee shops exist almost everywhere these days. Perhaps more in the southern climes for obvious reasons.

As for Prineville, a small town just less than an hour from Bend. Dry, hot in summer, cold but still dry in winter.

If it were me I'd take the Centralia gig and live in Olympia. Half-hour commute, I don't like living super close to work anyway, and easy to get to Tacoma for an evening. I didn't see much of interest when I was passing through Prineville last summer besides the lake on the east side of town.
