Cards look good. Should be a fun season.

Will do. Would everyone please post to the thread "The Offical St.Louis Cardinals Thread" and let this one die.

I would love to see more games where we post 3 home runs in the first inning but how many times is that going to happen? Last nights home runs were by Holliday,Freese and Molina and the Cardinals went on to a 7-1 victory. Tonight Kyle Lohse will face the Reds Leake.

I know it's early but lets look at some positives besides a decent record.

Stats are for overall MLB.

1. 4th in runs with 84.
2. 4th in B.A. with a team .276
3. 3rd on OBP with .345
4. 4th in slugging percentage at .449

They have scored 35 more runs than their opponents.

Freese,Furcal and Lohse looking good. Wainwright though still without a win.

I'm starting to get a sense of deja vu, with the Cardinals bullpen blowing the save for the second straight night. Both times with the starters holding the Cubs to only one run through 7.

Cardinal relievers rank right in the middle of the pack both in overall perfomance and situational performance.

For a team with a record of 14-7, I think you would have to concede that a statistical area in which they are in the middle of the pack would be characterized as one of their weaknesses, rather than a strength. And considering that three of their starters are in the top nine in the league (ERA), handing the ball to the "average" bullpen does not represent a positive turning point in the game.

It's hard to believe but the Cardinals have outscored their opponents by a total of 53 runs after only 22 games. That means they are scoring approximately 2.4 runs more on average every game than their opponents. Only the Texas Rangers can boast that amount. Currently 2nd in the ESPN power rankings.

I never said that it was a strength.

You'll have to conceed that you didn't fully think this through.

Turning from an above average starting rotation to an average bullpen could very well be a positive turning point in the game. Two points to consider.

First, the starters are probably above average for 6 or 7 innings. That doesn't mean they are above average for the 8th and 9th inning.

Second, and the point I'd most like to discuss, is that the average reliever is much more effective on a per inning basis than the average starter.

In 2011, the average reliver had a 3.69 ERA, .696 OPS against and 7.9 K's per 9 innings
The average starter had a 4.06 ERA, .731 OPS against and 6.3 K's per 9 innings.

I don't know how old you are, but the days of 9 inning starting pitchers are over.

As a fan with no real love for St. Louis, I have no problem with them employing this outdated strategy however.
