For safety reasons. When arriving you have a better view of other vehicle and pedestrian movements. If you pulled straight in and returned to your car, by the time you've buckled up, adjusted phone, air, etc. the surroundings have changed significantly, and you now must back up.

In the 3 years since I first post I got another car. That back up camera makes it easier to get in and I have much better visibility when driving out. Perhaps we are just seeing the overall fleet of cars getting upgraded and people's habits are changing because of technology

Like any skill, practice makes perfect. It’s a skill that comes in handy in some common driving scenarios. Give it a try!

Then you must have never been to Hawaii. People, even with large pick-ups, are so used to backing into parking spaces, that they do it in one step. Drive past the space, then back in. (or four steps if you are bad at backing up like me. Thank goodness for backup cameras!).

Large pickups are quite easy to back into a space. IMO, easier then pulling directly in if the spaces are tight. Think pivot points.
