NBCSports has bailed out of broadcast TV. The entire IMSA schedule will now only be shown on their app or peacock streaming service. The app is free to download, but requires authentification to use. All you have to do is sign on with your username and password used for your TV provider's account. Does anyone else have a problem with providing them all your login credentials? Live streaming is the same process.
The FAQs on the IMSA website also include this gem:
Q: Why is authentication being required?
A: Authentication supports our ongoing investment in sports programming for all of our platforms and is consistent with industry trends. Digital platforms require significant investment, and authentication allows us to capture the value of that investment, which in turn allows us to continue to provide cable/satellite/telco/live streaming service customers with high-quality sports coverage wherever and whenever they want at no additional cost. Of course, NBC Sports continues to make premier live sporting events and other sports programming available to all viewers on free over-the-air television through the NBC broadcast network.
I wonder how having my login credentials allows NBC to "...capture the value of that investment..."
Many networks are compelling viewers to sign up for their streaming service, but providing my login credentials is a giant step too far. There are many exciting changes underway in IMSA, from the new LMDH prototypes to the consolidation of the GT class. I've enjoyed watching the TV coverage in the past, and want to stay tuned, but this is ridiculous. To be perfectly clear, providing them my login credentials is a voluntary sacrifice of my privacy and potentially self-destructive.
