Pros and Cons of living in Sun City Georgetown (Austin: mineral rights, sale)

If you decide not to purchase in Sun City but still like that area, you might consider looking at Woodland Park just west of there. My brother build his retirement house there 10 years ago:

I have lived in Sun City, Texas for five years. It is neat, clean, and safe. Housing is priced reasonably, property taxes are moderate, and the property restrictions are not onerous.

This is a golf community. Approximately 25 to 30 per cent of the residents are golfers; the others don't play golf, but there are heaps of things for them to do.

The community association board of directors is controlled by Pulte. The resident board members can be out voted by Pulte, and they will be whenever an issue arises that threatens Pulte's interests.

All of the resident board members are golfers. If there is a conflict between the interest of the golfers and the interests of the non-golfers, who make up the majority of the community, the golfers can have it their way. When I was considering moving to Sun City, I was assured that the non-golfers did not pay for golf. This has proven to not be the case. Through a variety of subterfuges the non-golfers are supporting golf operations.

People who do not play golf would be well advised to consider a community without an integral golf course. Those interested in Del Webb communities should look at Frisco Lakes north of Dallas and Hill Country Retreat outside of San Antonio. Because they don't have golf on the property, there is no conflict between the golfers and non-golfers.

The rules of engagement for the resident's who want to address a association committee or the board are very restrictive.

Getting insight into the community association financials is slightly less difficult than raising an issue with a committee or board, but a resident has to know what questions to ask and how to interpret the results. It is slog for residents who are not accountants, financial specialist, etc.

Anyone considering Sun City or any similar community should make themselves aware of the impact that the community association (HOA) can have on them. I would never again live in a large community with a community (homeowners) association.

I have lived in Sun City for 5 years and my next door neighbors are a scientist and an actress. There are many professionals who live here, especially in the older neighborhoods (built by Del Webb rather than Pulte.) The DW homes are much better built and all have 10' ceilings and open floor plans. However, the oldest homes are now over 15 years old and many are starting to need updating. The cost of living depends on where you're coming from. Being a life long Texan, we've never had the high cost of living so it seems "average" to us. If you are from CA, you will think it is "cheap".

As far as your politics go, you will not be welcomed with open arms by most of your neighbors. I have been a Republican since the Goldwater years even though I grew up in a Democratic family. When I see an auto with an Obama sticker on it I almost get sick to my stomach. Why would you want to live here. Our state has done very well in recent years and I don't think turning it blue would do anything but drag it down to the level of California.

Seriously? You get sick to your stomach because someone is exercising their right to vote as they choose? People can vote however they want and you're just gonna have to deal with it. That goes both ways. Get used to living next to people who don't think like you, look like you, or do the same things that you do. That's life. But I must keep in mind you are likely older, so I guess that explains a lot.

So, the first sentence is true unless the difference is age? And all "older" people are just alike? There's a bit of a disconnect there, an internal inconsistency, it seems to me.

No, there's no "internal inconsistency" at all.

And what I stated was true, she needs to get used to seeing people who are different and might happen to have bumper stickers on their cars that she won't like.

The internal consistency I see is the very clearly stated bias against "older people" while advocating being open to those who are not just like you.

Moved to Sun City six months ago. Really like the woodshop. The fine art facilities are excellent also, but the best part of Sun City is the people. Coming from a coastal city, the friendliness and helpfulness floored me. And now my mind is scheming on how to bring in help when the day comes I can no longer be independent. heh heh, in 10 years? One of the bicycle groups took me on a 16 mile route through Sun C that ended at the cafe to tell lies and such, And roots? Well, I gathered some pecans under a tree that my grandfather planted in 1896. I like the paint color rules and such. Don't need a chartreuse house on the block, or artichokes in the front yard. LOL
