...and I agreed with the sentiment:

"People who think that their god grants them special favors, while that same god allows millions of children to suffer and starve, are not only delusional, they're also especially arrogant, vain, and self-absorbed".

This has always been deeply troubling for me once I stepped away from the faith.

It is almost like there are people out there that are completely immune to any concept of "survivor's guilt".

I readily admit that I am self absorbed... and I'd be vain and arrogant if I had anything to be vain and arrogant about.

But even I have limits on how special I feel like I am... and while I take for granted how very lucky I am... I don't take for granted that I'm lucky.

I'm religious. I agree with the post. It's inhumane to think children can be bombed and starved for being the "wrong" religion.

Agreed.

So much of how your life turns out are based on the circumstances that you were born into. That's all out of your control. Yes, there are a lot of things you can control, and there are plenty of "rags to riches" stories, but many more people end up stuck rather than going too far from the circumstances they were born into.

I feel like this should be a sticky at the top of our forum.

Whenever I see an ad for some children's cancer hospital or to support some starving children in Africa, I unconsciously start singing...

Jesus Loves The Little Children, all the little children of the world. Be they yellow, black or white, they are precious in His sight...

In his sermon on the mount Jesus said, “He makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (ESV).

All Bible reading Christians know that this is true. So do atheists and agnostics. We live in the material world, a world of ego.

Why should it bother me how someone else perceives his blessings and sorrows? It's not my problem.
