what do you think about those shipping container homes? (plan, bedroom, build)

There is show on DYI or HGTV channel I think about man and wife that have a company building homes out of shipping containers--
Most of what they do is in the western states--
Saw one program about a build in AZ and one in Montana or Wyoming--maybe Idaho---
The AZ home was for family with land who had adopted a Russian boy with fetal alcohol syndrome-
He was older now--like 19 or so and wanted a home of his own so they designed a home with a separate workshop using common patio
Home was fairly neat looking-had loft bed-small kitchen--
I have read pros and cons about shipping containers
These people seal the wood floors to seal in all the nasty stuff they might be tainted with
Get another company to cut out windows and door spaces
It was interesting to see the design/construction
One house in Montana or Idaho was 3 containers offset for upper floor and larger ground level---
Very interesting design---open flow--looked neat
How it held up to those winters I don't know--
Don't think they used spray foam insulation so likely pretty cold...
I have never seen a decent cost comparison on shipping container conversions. I simply don’t see how it would pencil out when compared to traditional building methods.
Just because something can be done, doesn’t mean that it should be done.
I imagine they can be cheaper than traditional stick built
The question would be is it better at that price trade
And what about other non-traditional means
You know, if you have a piece of land with utility hookups, you can actually buy a small house and have it moved there for really short money; and you end up with an actual house.
Yes---houses can be moved
Lot depends on original structure and locations at both ends
But container homes seem to appeal to those who want a very modern, streamlined look
Most homes already constructed don't have that same exterior

Why do you imagine this? Where will you save the money?
My brother bought a used container but not for a house. His is for storage. I can tell you this much, you don't want to be in it or near it after 10AM in the morning. I doubt you'd live long enough to make it out of it. They are an extremely hot box. I doubt you can get enough insulation in and on one to matter. I can't imagine what it would take to heat one in Alaska.

I agree. Some of those projects look like the cost of conversion is comparable to building from scratch...just with the novelty of being a shipping container. I have a builder friend who builds fantastic homes at around $1 million each but is going ga-ga over shipping container homes. I don't get it...I thought the point was affordable housing with recycled containers. I've seen commercial shops converted from containers but they were left in an obvious rough state. Maybe I'd consider it as a weekend or vacation home.
