I couldn't turn up anything in the search function for safe streets/boundaries within the Ypsilanti area for renting a place.

Since I'm looking to rent a freestanding house by myself, I'm basically just looking to avoid the type of high-crime area where I'm going to be at significantly higher-than-normal risk of a break-in. Otherwise, I'm not super concerned about it. I like to ride my bike around at night sometimes, but avoidable.

Any tips?

Thanks!

  • East of Depot Town and West of Prospect St. Called Depot Town neighborhood.
  • West and South-West of EMU, without going too much South of Cross St/Packard Rd, or West of Hewitt Rd. Called College Heights and Normal Park neighborhoods.
  • In Ypsilanti Twp South of Huron River Drive, or in the neighborhoods flanking Huron River Drive.

I would concur this is a reasonable description to work with.

These are good suggestions, however keep in mind that the sketchy types don't necessarily stay in their neighborhoods. For example, I have friends in the Normal Park neighborhood, which is nice, but many questionable individuals will cut through that neighborhood, on their way to some place else.

I would not walk or bike around any neighborhood after dark in Ypsi.

Ypsi is very small (~25,000?) and one neighborhood will be directly adjacent to another one, sometimes good ones are adjacent to bad ones.

Also keep in mind that while you may save on rent in Ypsi, you will pay a lot more in car insurance due to the higher crime rate.
