I have been taking 2 300mg capsules 3 times per day for the last 2 years. They seemed to have helped for the first 6 months or so. but not sure they still are. I hesitate to quit to see any effect in case they are helping. I mail order 2 bottles of 120 300mg capsules about every 6 weeks for about $20 each order.

FWIW my glucose tests hover right around 95-105

Given relatively low cost, I would say give it a try.

I would use citrus bergamot for cholesterol
https://www.amazon.com/Jarrow-Formul.../dp/B00B9QGYCC

and one of these products for sugar
https://www.amazon.com/Potency-Gymne.../dp/B001LERMVE
https://www.amazon.com/Source-Natura.../dp/B00014FKDM

Cinnamon is good for sugar, I think this is the best one, but I would choose Gymnema over it if I had to choose just one
https://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Best-.../dp/B06XXFSM3P

Try to walk after meals, if possible limit or cut out bread/pasta/soda/ketchup/potatoes

If you do go for a high fat/protein diet(eggs, butter, meats), it takes about 2 weeks to get over the sugar cravings. The sugar cravings do go away, its not something you are fighting forever.
Diet will trump supplements, and there are many health benefits for staying in ketosis

Ideally you want to be in the low 80s when taking a blood sugar test

Why do they call it "citrus bergamot?" Bergamot is, by definition, a member of the citrus family of plants. There is no other kind of bergamot. And what part of the plant is the powder from? The leaves, flowers, fruit juice, fruit peel, or stems? Each has a different function and contains different phytochemicals.

And - why not just eat a tangerine instead? It tastes better, will fill you up better, and contains more overall nutrients than an isolated part of an orange (bergamot is a specific type of orange).

I suggest looking into the extracts of cinnamon like Cinnulin and CinSulin. I prefer Iherb for supplements but this Amazon page has a good summary about Cinnulin.

https://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Best-.../dp/B000BD4DH2

"Because of its standardization, Cinnulin PF** is more potent than regular culinary cinnamon and is safer. "

Citrus Bergamot is a fabulous supplement that delivers spectacular results for cholesterol and fasting glucose.

https://botanicalinstitute.org/citru...ion%20in%20BMI.

"After 90 days of supplementation, while both doses of citrus bergamot improved outcomes, the 1,300mg extract had the greatest benefits, including an 18.1% reduction in fasting blood sugar"

Here is more info from previous posts.

Here is the full paper. In table 1 it shows that Bergamot alone dropped TC from 278 to 191, 10 mg of a statin dropped it to 195 and combined it was 172.

The paper that talks about ldl particles and plaque was cited in reference 218.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26779019/

"In addition, a significant increase in LDL-1 (from 41.2 ± 0.2 to 49.6 ± 0.2%, p < 0.0001) was accompanied by decreased small, dense LDL-3, -4, and 5 particles "

"cIMT was also reduced significantly over a relatively short time frame of 6 months."

Here is a link to download the full pdf article.

It seems like the shrinkage of plaque refers to the reduction of cIMT.

.

The Jarrow product is the only one that is exclusively Bergamot and has a dose of 500mg per capsule. So one would need 2x per day for the 1000mg study dosage.

The Now product adds plant sterols and one would need 4 per day since their 500mg dose is from 2 tablets.

The Vitacost product adds berberine and one would also need 4 capsules/day based on the serving size.

Herbal Powers sells a Bergamot supplement directly. It is not available on Vitacost or Iherb. They have a buy 3 get one free coupon.

There are several supplements that will help with cholesterol. My sister-in-law took Citrus Bergamot and dropped her total cholesterol from 225 to 175 in 6 months.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6497409/

"The results of five different clinical trials (Table 1) using bergamot in various forms suggest the polyphenol fraction can lower LDL-C and total cholesterol."

Bergamot produces excellent results according to this study.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6497409/

Bergamot juice was found to reduce cholesterol (29.27%), triglycerides (46.12%), and LDL (51.72%) and an increase in HDL (27.61%) levels versus hypercholesterolemic controls

Again, what PART of the bergamot is in that capsule? Bergamot is a plant. It is a citrus plant. The fruit is inedible, as it is very bitter tasting. The essential oil extracted by centrifuge from the peel is used in aromatherapy, perfuming, and in making Earl Grey tea and certain candies. The extract of the bergamot leaves have use in medicine for lowering cholesterol, but the essential oil extracted from the fruit peel does not. Nor does the extract from the tree bark, root, or flower.

So I'm asking - what part of the plant is used to make this powder in the capsule? And, what was the method they used to dry the extract into a powder?

I think its the juice & the albedo(white part).

https://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...13434415300232

"the beneficial properties of the C. bergamia juice have been raising interest and have been the subject of recent studies, considering the potentiality of its health promoting substances"

"Bergamot has a unique profile of flavonoid and flavonoid glycosides present in its juice and albedo, such as neoeriocitrin, neohesperidin, naringin, rutin, neodesmin, rhoifolin and poncirin. Bergamot differs from other Citrus fruits not only because of the composition of its flavonoids, but also because of their particularly high content "

If you really want to know here is a patent for a Citrus Bergamot extract. See pages 5-7.

https://patentimages.storage.googlea...09315289B2.pdf

Here is more info from a manufacturer of the extract.

https://www.head-sa.com/company/

https://www.head-sa.com/products/ber...olic-fraction/

Here is a very interesting page with info on the "mode of action" which is much more interesting to me.

https://hpingredients.com/products/p...ts/bergamonte/

"Flavonoids in Bergamonte® activate AMPK and stimulate glucose uptake. ..... AMPK activation can prevent abdominal fat accumulation, regulate glucose tolerance, normalize liver markers, and reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver and heart."

If the extract is from the juice and albedo, then it's not the part that is known medically to lower the cholesterol, and is therefore - fraudulent. Sales and marketing hype.

As I said - extract from the LEAF is what is known medically to lower cholesterol. In addition, it's not alt-med, it's supplements.

In addition, the most useful components of the extract come from the volatile oils. Once an extract is vaporized into powder, the oils barely exist, if at all. If you're going to use the extract, it should be in its original (or filtered original) form - a liquid, likely used with a dropper.
