I have been a Gin drinker for years but feel a need for change. I typically would have a Martini or with Tonic and Lime which is obviously less evident for flavor notes. It's more the martini component where I have found Vodka kind of rough (Tito's, Ketel One or Belvedere for example).

I agree with @Jkgourmet Reyka makes an excellent vodka.

I am not sure exactly what this 'gross alcohol after taste' is.

I have been drinking local artisanal liquors for the past few years. I think they taste just fine.

Try a vodka made from grape or sugar cane rather than grain. Ciroc is made from grapes, it seems less acidy than other vodka.
I’ve not noticed any gross alcohol taste from any vodka.
My go to cocktail is vodka (usually Grey Goose) and club soda, with lemon, lime, and a maraschino cherry.

I like Finlandia. I don't know if it's top-shelf, but it doesn't have that kind of petroleum-like aftertaste, which is what I think you're talking about.

I guess it depends on how you mix your vodka martini. If you make it very-very-dry, as in a shot of vodka with two drops of vermouth, then the vermouth will be barely noticeable, and the vodka's aftertaste will come through. I've noticed it too.

I do have some inexpensive vodka that I use for Bloody Marys, which is where the cheap stuff belongs, since there is so much else mixed into that drink that can overwhelm any vodka aftertaste. But I don't always want a Bloody Mary.

Recently, a friend suggested that I try a vodka martini with the cheap stuff, only this time, ramp up the vermouth. In fact, he said that he rather enjoys a 50/50 cheap vodka/decent vermouth martini, served on the rocks with an olive. I tried it, on the rocks, with an olive--and it wasn't bad at all. Tasted more of vermouth (I used Noilly Prat Dry, which I like better than Martini and Rossi dry) than anything else, but there wasn't that vodka aftertaste.

Just something you may wish to consider if you've got a cheap vodka.

Stay with high quality clear (non-flavored) top shelf vodkas. Vodka is a nearly pure mixture of ethanol and water that's specifically made to have no characteristic taste or aroma.
Good, smooth vodka to drink solo - I like Reyka. Harridan (lightly fruity) - if you want locally made. Grey Goose has a cult following. Absolut and Belvedere are top shelf, smooth vodkas, highly regarded. Maybe you just prefer wheat over rye.
Best vodka for martini - try Haku.

I bought just Reyka, I'm impressed, very clean, no oily aftertaste.
