I have a bottle of Evan Williams black label that I've been drinking for a few weeks. Seeing that it was getting low and almost time to buy a new bottle, I bought one yesterday. The price was a few dollars less than the previous bottle (this has to be the best whiskey you can buy for so little money!) and my first thought was, they actually lowered the price for 2024? That's a first.

But then I noticed that my new bottle looks like a miniature compared to the old bottle. Well, it turns out that I've been buying a liter all along and thinking it was a fifth, which is what the new bottle is.

I poured off a drink tonight and wow, it was super smooth. Much smoother than the bigger bottle. So did my big bottle go off a little bit from being a few weeks old and slowly being poured off, or does the smaller fifth just taste different? The latter seems dubious, and I am anything but a Bourbon expert, but you never know.

We don't drink spirits often and when we do it's mostly rum, Captain Morgan or Gosling Black.

But occasionally we do have bourbon, Jim Beam or Maker's Mark. I have noticed, especially with JB, different batches have a different taste, sometimes harsher than others, sometimes sweeter.

I'm not a bourbon maker so I don't really know why. Maybe the barrels have something to do with it.

I personally wouldn't think that what you are perceiving is possible for the reasons eddierussell has stated above. But here's the thing, it's your tastebuds that matter on this and not anyone else's. So my advice to you Stephen would be to only buy EW black label in the fifth size from now on. Cheers!
