Remarks: PILOT WAS ON A TEST FLT TO CHECK LDG GEAR. WHILE MAKING A LOW PASS OVER THE GRASS STRIP BETWEEN THE RWY & MAINT BLDG AT THE ARPT, A FLOCK OF EGRETS FLEW UP AHEAD OF THE A/C. AS HE TRIED TO AVOID THE BIRDS, HE STRUCK THE GROUND. AFTER BECOMING AIRBORNE BRIEFLY, THE A/C MADE AN EMERGENCY LDG DUE TO PROP DAMAGE IN THE RWY OVERRUN AREA. PILOT HAD BACK INJURY; WAS TREATED & RELEASED AT MEDICAL CENTER. ENGS & PROPS HEAVILY DMGD. PILOT WAS AFRAID BIRDS WOULD BREAK THRU WINDSHLD SO HE PUT A/C INTO A DIVE, NOT REALIZING HOW CLOSE HE WAS TO THE GROUND.
