PILOT REPTD BIRD AS "SANDHILL CRANE?" AND SIZE AS LARGE. IN A REPLY TO DATABASE MGR QUESTION, HE SAID, "THE BIRD WAS NOT IDENTIFIED AS A SANDHILL CRANE. WE DID NOT SEE THE BIRD PRIOR TO THE STRIKE. AS WE RETURNED TO LAND, WE OBSERVED AND MANEUVERED TO AVOID STRIKING WHAT APPEARED TO BE A CRANE WHILE ON SHORT FINAL." ENG WAS DESTROYED. TIME OUT OF SERVICE DUE TO RED TAPE.
