Hurricanes in Crawfordville Fl (Tallahassee: insurance, neighborhood, living in)

Planning a move to the Crawfordville area to enjoy a more relaxed Florida lifestyle.
I would love to live in Panacea, but I do not want to deal with the storm surge and damage from hurricanes. How bad is it in Crawfordville during a major hurricane? I know they have the wind damage but what about storm surge if you do not live near a river? I am looking for in depth answers please. Would it be wiser to live closer to Tallahassee? I want to live in the country and be as close to the Gulf as I can with staying out of the storm surge. Also how expensive is flood insurance in Florida on average.

It would be a very rare thing for Wakulla County to experience a direct hit from a major storm.

The only time I can remember anything significant was 2005. That was an extremely busy hurricane season, and Posey's (a once popular seafood restaurant in St. Mark's - just down the road from C'ville on the coast) was heavily damaged. I was living in Tallahassee at the time.

Note: These are considered 'near worse-case’ scenario, each storm will be different, some storms will cause flooding others may not at all, these assume storm comes in right at high tide(surge is the rise in water above normal tide level), highest surge is typically found on the upper right corner of the approaching point/eye of a hurricane and less further away from that point you go, every mile makes a difference in hurricanes, you'll need to use the links at the top of the page to change storm category as water is usually higher with higher the storm category, the colors represent water depth over normally dry ground so yellow means 3 to 6ft water depth possible and red indicates 9+ft possible, etc., the map does NOT take into account rain or regular river flooding (See FEMA maps), map does include waterways connected to the ocean as surge can travel up waterways, map is considered accurate down to 'neighborhood' level so you can't zoom in to your specific house, I'd recommend zooming into your future properties then zoom out keeping an eye on that point (as map layers disappear when zoomed in too far), keep in mind only 4 Cat5's have ever been known to hit the US with last being Andrew in 1992 & Michael in 2018.

Hurricanes rarely hit Tally area. Strongest has been a 2.

Just curious if you decided to move here? Wakulla county is a great place to live. And no matter where in florida you live you will have to worry about hurricanes. It sucks. But God! Here it is Monday and this hurricane Idalia
