I applied to Syracuse University for graduate school, but I don't know if I've been accepted yet. I should know in the beginning of March.

I'd prefer to not live in campus housing since I'm older and I don't want to deal with drunk freshmen and stuff. I'm trying to be proactive in finding a place to live in the event I do get in. The program starts the beginning of June and I don't want to be apartmentless.

I'd like somewhere clean, nice and quiet. I wouldn't mind commuting 15 minutes or so, but my only question with that is winter weather. I know Syracuse gets a lot of snow in the winter. Are the roads well taken care of or is travel bad in the winter? I have a 45 minute commute now and I know lately the roads in PA haven't been kept clear in the winter and it makes the commute stink.

I've found ten apartment complexes throughout the city and they all claim to be in a "desirable" neighborhood. I visited the University last fall and if what I saw was a "desirable" neighborhood, then I don't trust what the apartment listing says. If you can't recommend any areas, can someone point me in the direction where I can find neighborhood data?

I know I have a lot of questions and I'm nervous that if I do get in to Syracuse, I won't find a place to live. Can anyone recommend an area? Thanks!

hershpa.....Here is a link that may help some

Try and stay away from the city and you should be alright. As for the desirable neighborhoods...post them here and I'm sure we can guide you in the right direction.

Most of the time when the snow flies in Syracuse they keep up with it really well. Main streets within the city limits are just about always black-pavement. You'll notice when you are driving and all of a sudden the road conditions that were snow covered are now bare pavement. "You just entered the city limits from a suburb."

Thanks for the help! I didn't write down the neighborhoods when I was looking. I just wrote down the complex name, address and phone number.

If you know anything about these complexes or the areas they're in, I really appreciate it.

Onondaga Meadows - 140 Westbrook Hills Dr.
Madison Towers -60 Presidential Plaza
Jefferson Tower - 50 Presidential Plaza
Parkside Commons -2005 E. Fayette Street
Clarendon Heights - 508 Ivy Ridge Road
Bric Tre 1 & Bric Tre 2 - 3116 Court Street
Greenwich Manor - 679 E. Seneca Turnpike
Carrington Heights - 1855 Burnet Avenue
The James - 923 James Street

Also, I have another request. My parents surprised me with a puppy last week, so if there are any good parks or places to take your dog in the area, let me know.

Thanks so much for all your help!

hershpa,

The only complex I'm familiar with is Onondaga Meadows in Westbrook across from Onondaga Comm. College. It is a decent place to live as a young male/female. I really can't comment on the others because I do not know very much about them other than some are in the city. You have plenty of room to roam around w/ the puppy at or near the Westbrook areas. Crime is very low there because there is a sheriffs sub station near by.

Onondaga Lake Park has a Dog Park called "Wegmans Good Dog Park". It's located in the Town of Salina in the northern suburbs.

Here's the link:
http://onondagacountyparks.com/parks/olp/good_dog.asp (broken link)

Suburban located in the town of Onondaga, southwest of the city - Onondaga Meadows - 140 Westbrook Hills Dr.
City downtown tall tower Madison Towers -60 Presidential Plaza
City downtown tall tower Jefferson Tower - 50 Presidential Plaza
City near SU Parkside Commons -2005 E. Fayette Street
City but suburban like setting -Clarendon Heights - 508 Ivy Ridge Road
City on the northside Bric Tre 1 & Bric Tre 2 - 3116 Court Street
Suburban - but no pets -Greenwich Manor - 679 E. Seneca Turnpike
City Eastwood Carrington Heights - 1855 Burnet Avenue
City on the northside The James - 923 James Street

Sorry, can't help much more. I don't know the city that well or the areas south of the city. Usually I just tell everyone to avoid the city because of crime etc. I would recommend Apartments in Salina or Liverpool area... BUT Liverpool is so far away from the SU Campus, it might be too much of a drive.
