According to an article in Sunday's Post-Standard, Syracuse area companies are performing an increasingly influential role in developing and manufacturing devices and technologies related to national defense. Syracuse joins Boston, Los Angeles, and Orlando, Florida as having one of the largest concentratinons of radar businesses in the country. The industry employs roughly 5,000 people in Central New York. Many top scientists and engineers earn wages in the low six figures. To compete for younger talent that naturally gravitates toward larger cities, local radar and defense-based companies have some of the region's most sophisticated work stations and offer amenties like state-of-the art fitness centers and walking trails on their suburban-based campuses.

In addition to Syracuse's staple of established radar companies like Lockheed Martin and locally-based Anaren, several smaller companies have been started in recent years by former employees of larger firms, a sign that the region has been able to retain skiled employees in this specialized field.

I'm not surprised, as if you look at employment websites, you will notice the pretty good amount of engineering jobs available. I think this is something many people in the area overlook, because many just think in terms of manufacturing jobs. There are jobs in the area out there for people with an education in industries in demand today. So, this is a great article highlighting something that could continue to grow in the area.
