I plan on moving to Portland to go to the University of Southern Maine, what are some things to expect/look out for? Also what does accessibility look like on campus and in the city? I'm a disabled (in and out of a wheelchair, can walk about 2 miles, stairs are tricky) 18-year-old and this will be my first time living away from home in the midwest, so I just want to be better prepared!

Hi there. Congrats on your acceptance to USM.

A few questions for ya.

You said you were moving from the Midwest - a rural area, suburb, or city? - if you don't mind answering.

Will you be living right intown Portland? Living in campus housing or looking for a apartment/house off campus? Or commuting to classes from outside town?

Will you be taking public transit? Or are you bringing a car?

Also, did you have any specific questions about certain things? Like are you wanting to know about getting to basics such the grocery store or about the presence of maybe curb ramps or is it other things you want to get information on?

Answers to these questions will help us drill down to the heart of what you need to know instead of overloading you with information that might be useful but maybe not necessarily relevant to your particular situation.

I have had tenants who were college students at UM-Orono. Something that I observed was when they went home for school breaks, they would buy a cheap 20-year-old car and drive it to Maine. Then during the next semester sell it.

In Maine, there are few older cars, because they tend to rust out quickly. If you can source an automobile from somewhere that does not salt the roads, you should be able to locate older cars for fairly cheap. Bring them to Maine and double your money.

There can be a fair amount of snow and ice in winter, and depending very much on the location and how well it's maintained, the sidewalks can be slippery. You can buy something like these Yaktrax though, to improve traction. They have metal to grip the ice, but because they don't have spikes, they're easier on interior floors.
