When I lived in Iroquois Point 10 years ago (when it was strictly military) a lot of people did kayak to work. My father used to take the ferry from there to Pearl Harbor. I don't know if they still have that there or not. I'm a little sad that they've turned Iroqouis Point into resort style housing..ugh. But yes plenty of people kayaked from there.

Kayak, shmayak... that sounds like too much work.

Personally, I think one of these babies would be a lot less effort, and a lot more fun. As long as you kept below the radar, I don't see any problem.

Hunterseat,

Many months late, but thanks for the tips. By the time I got here, sequestration took its effect on the boat ride across the harbor. I have not yet ventured to kayak but I am going to bike there a few times a week to get into good shape.

I timed it and it will take me just as long as sitting in traffic now that school is back in.

Go get your kayak permit anyway, just in case. My supervisor wouldn't have it any other way. I carpool with my other half so... You'll probably become addicted to it.

You get it from the base - a requirement to kayak from where we live, across Pearl Harbor and over to Hickam AFB. You have to get clearance so you're not out there when a vessel comes plowing through. (and I've heard some hair raising stories)

Default Kayak route from Lima landing Iroquis Pt. to Alpha 7 landing.

How long do you think it will take to get to one side? Is it dangerous?

I read on here about a boat service ran by the Navy that transports people from the West Loch to Hickam but read conflicting answers about whether it is in service still or not.

Thank you in advance for your inputs.
There is a lot of people here not giving you the right or partial info. Yes the Gray Boat no longer runs from Lima landing to Pearl Habor Ship Yard area. I too use to ride the Gray Boat for 8 months then the sequester hit. A lot of people begged for the Boat to keep running and were even willing to pay for the Boat. I don't even see how the Navy couldn't keep the Boat running. I still see people Vanpooling on the Bases and I believe there is Federal Subsities suporting it. Why can't the federal subsities support the Gray Boat? I too used the vanpool for 5 years a few years back. More so, people that work on Base for DON are eligible for free city bus passes every quarter. I say again FREE??? I thought we are in sequestration??? Go figure!!! I went back to driving from Ewa Beach to JBPHH after the Navy discountinued the Gray Boat on March 18. I could not believe how many "F" words came out of my mouth! Believe me I lived in Ewa Beach for most of my life and the traffic is getting worse!!! So I decided to do the kayak thing and have been doing it for 3 weeks now.

Anyway, you want to Kayak from Lima landing to Alpha 7 landing... There are quite a few people crossing the harbor in the morning and into the late afternoon. Most times you will kayak accross with a few other kayakers. But you must first get a permit from Port Operations 808-473-1168. They will issue you a permit with a number and instructions on how to kayak accross to and from both landings. Before you launch your kayak you must first call Harbor Control 808-474-6262 and ask permission to cross. They will tell you if it's safe or not. Each crossing in your kayak will take about 5-10 minutes depending on the person, kayak type, conditions on the water, etc, etc. Upon crossing, you must call Harbor Control again and tell them that you made accross safely. Often, there is a patrol boat watching people cross the harbor. If you don't know where Lima landing is located, it is on Iroquis Pt where the Boat weapons are located. You can ask the gate guard for directions on how to get there. Alpha 7 landing is located between the Navy Supply Salvage building and the Hickam Officers Club. If you are looking accross from Lima landing towards Hickam, you can see the Hickam's statue "Missing Man Formation". I use that just right of it for a landmark.

As far it being safe? Well Harbor Patrol tells you when its safe. And the sharks? Well I haven't seen any but they are in the Harbor. Probally more towards the bottom but hey, they are not out to get you! Get yourself a good stable kayak and you'll be fine...

Hunterseat,

I love the kayaking. I finally pulled the trigger on the permit. It takes 7 min to cross. You can probably do it in less if you have better equipment. I got a cheap $125 kayak with paddle.

For anyone living in Ewa and working on Hickam AFB or Pearl Harbor,

This is the way to go. PM if you need info on how to get your permit. The permit is free. You need to have base privileges to do it.
