FYI -- Speed Zone cameras are in use in the I-80 construction zone in East Stroudsburg. I just got a letter in the mail with photos showing my license plate, saying I was clocked at 51 in a 40 on 5/18/23. The fine is $0.00 so this is a warning, and I thought I'd send out a warning to others!

I'm pretty sure the cameras are only active when the work zone is active.

Still can't rep you but thanks for the heads up. Just an FYI, stay at or no more than 10 mph over the speed limit and you will not get a speeding ticket. General info I received from a LEO. 11 mph over and you have no other tickets, they didn't see the need to give you points and fine you, IMHO.

11 is the magic number in work zones in pa - it doubles the vig. My kid got one on the TP near somerset 66 in 55 - just a warning. another couple workers got killed about a month ago so they are doubling down

Personally, I think this whole camera ticket policy is a sham, just another way to bleed the public for a few extra dollars. I hate the idea that commuters can pile these violations up for weeks without ever knowing they have a ticket coming in the mail. They have up to 90 days to send you your violation "Per Title 75 C.S. 3369, notices of violation shall be provided to a registered owner within 90 days of the violation occurring. In most cases, the notice of violation will be mailed shortly after the violation has occurred." Keep in mind the first fine is $75 and all subsequent fines are $150. If they would take the full 90 days a driver that daily commutes both ways through one of these zones could pill up close to $30K worth of fines.

I know some will say don't speed through those work zones. But I believe that safety is about the layout of the work zone. Ohio, with work zone speed limits of 60 or 65 mph, I felt safer and I saw fewer accidents than I have witnessed in PA. PA has no regard for the motorist when they set up a work zone. I have watched us force traffic down to one lane on I-80 to pick up trash on one day and the next day the same thing to paint new lines or repair potholes. If we want to make our roads safe the DOT should coordinate the work so they get out there, get the job done, and get the heck out our way! The longer they hold up traffic, the greater the chance of an accident. Like Ohio, PA should widen the shoulders of our roads so that they can have lighter traffic and use those shoulders when they work on our roads.

Red light cameras have been shown to cause more accidents than they avoided. It would not surprise me if the same does not happen with these new cameras as drivers learn the location of the cameras and abruptly brake to prevent getting a ticket. The only real winner will be the politicians that get contributions from the company that installs the cameras!

Of course it is. It's called monthly revenue for the municipalities. In laymen's terms, quotas.

so someone does not want to comply with the law because they have a cell phone and are important, and we push the cause to the camera? in 2023, this argument does not surprise me.

If you go to the NHTSA website and look up the statistics for work zone accidents you will see that 9 out of 10 fatalities are to motorists and not pedestrians. I am not trying to say that highway work is not dangerous, but working smarter and trying to keep traffic moving smoothly will reduce the number of accidents.

As our world turns we are moving at 1,000 mph. If our world would come to an abrupt stop we would all die. That is what is happening in our poorly planned work zones. Motorists come around a corner to find traffic stopped in front of them. Or, trucks with their brakes overheated, find they have to come to a complete stop while descending down long hills - like our five-mile hill on I-80.

If speed is so dangerous, why does our government allow manufacturers to produce vehicles that can go three or more times faster than posted speed limits? Since almost all vehicles today are smart vehicles, why not force our manufacturers into making vehicles that never exceed the speed limit? That would be the logical thing to do if they really don't want speeders on our roads. There would be no reason for speed cameras or even speed traps. Our police could focus on reckless drivers and tailgaters. Like you point out it is 2023 and we do have that technology today.
