what's the difference? Whiich is the preferred town either aesthetically or number of things to do? Richer experience? Better stores? Access to cultural events? User friendly? Cost of housing? Which would you spend a weekend hanging out in - perference, or is it neither - you love _____________?

If you lived in NYC and wanted to get a weekend fun place to have a house in, where would you pick? I am looking in this generl area but open to other areas....into books, art, antiques, decorating..not a snow bunny, nor do I need commute issues or good schools. Would like to keep taxes at bay as much as I can too...

thanks 12b

I live in Hamilton, so I admit that I am biased. That said, Clinton is on the fringes of the Utica-New Hartford area, and therefore has much easier access to things like national chains--so if you need to be within minutes of Olive Garden or Best Buy or Lowe's, you can achieve that from Clinton. From Hamilton, it would be a 35-45 minute drive. However, in terms of a "get-away," Hamilton's locally owned restaurants and taverns are charming, laid-back, and a lot of fun. Hamilton, unlike Clinton, also has a movie theater--only three screens, but Clinton has none--so Clintonians go to the movies in New Hartford.

Both Clinton and Hamilton have colleges. Hamilton College is in Clinton and Colgate University is in Hamilton. Colgate has many excellent men's and women's sports teams, including D-1 hockey, and games are open to the public (tickets are not expensive). To be far, Hamilton College also has sports, but I don't know much about them. In addition, there are many, many educational and cultural events at Colgate--lectures, concerts, art exhibits, world-renowned speakers--that are open to the public.

For a weekend place that really feels like taking a step into a Norman Rockwell painting, I'd recommend Hamilton. I am not certain, but I believe the property taxes are a bit lower in Hamilton than Clinton.

Hamilton College's sports teams are D3 and play in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, while Colgate plays in the Patriot League.

Both communities have that New England feel and Hamilton is the bigger of the two villages. Actually, the town of Hamilton was one of, if not the, fastest growing town in the Syracuse metro area between 2000-2010.

I believe that people in Hamilton may go to Oneida, Norwich or Fayetteville for big box shopping. I have seen people with Colgate gear at the Towne Center at Fayetteville in the past.

As a native, I know both areas well. I would say that Colgate plays a larger role in the lives of Hamilton residents than Hamilton College to Clinton inhabitants. A large portion of its population is associated with the university, giving it a rural college town feel. By contrast, Clinton residents are more likely to commute to New Hartford/Utica to work, giving it a more suburban vibe. As for taxes, no data off-hand, but Clinton is known for having some of the highest taxes in the area, so I would assume that they are significantly higher than Hamilton's.

Another community that may work in that general area may be Canastota due to its proximity to things like Sylvan Beach, Turning Stone Casino and to highway access that allows you to go to either Syracuse or Utica for a bigger community. It is a walkable village that also has the Boxing Hall of Fame. Nearby Chittenango has the Oz-Stravaganza due to being the birthplace of the author of the Wizard of Oz. Oneida Lake is nearby as well. You would still be pretty close to the communities in the OP too.

Cazenovia is also in that general area and has a look and feel in line with Hamilton and Clinton: Village of Cazenovia
Cazenovia Chamber of Commerce

The village is on Cazenovia Lake and the most affluent out of the 3 communities.

Also, Caz like Hamilton and Clinton, has a small college within the village: About | Cazenovia College
