So? Living down here, I wish I lived someplace that people looked at as Alabama. I prefer that to the people who view me negatively for being from the damn liberal black hole.
I was wondering the same thing. What's wrong with Alabama? Oh I forgot, they don't sneer at people from other places.

I'm obviously not talking about all of Alabama. That was simply a jibe at the lifestyle Sean brought up. But the "redneck" lifestyle is one that I do sneer at, and it's one prevalent in the rural areas of the southern United States. Any lifestyle that promotes stubborn incompetence is one that deserves to be sneered at, no matter what part of the country it exists in. I'd like to think that people don't consider upstate NY a part of that lifestyle. There are rednecks here, yes, but it is NOT what defines the region in the least bit. Anyone who says otherwise or is bizarrely proud of that definition is a limited person.
What does 'urban' have to do with upstate/downstate?
Albany, Utica, Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, etc., etc. have areas you couldn't tell apart from the Bronx either.
Good point, as I think some have an idea of Upstate of just being rural, but you can find very urban environments up here too.
