Is it safe? Depends on how you view drunks, thieves, and other criminals. Lived in the area for close to 35 years - never went to NOLA Mardi Gras.

I went solo in 2022.

I was safe, but the poverty in the area is noticeable, and it's definitely a more confrontational culture. You will need to watch your back a little more than other cities.

My first night in town, I went to a Tropical Isles, and the bartender was shocked when I told her I walked there all the way from Esplanade. She said "Yeah, don't do that again. Spend the 10 dollars and take an Uber back to your hotel. You'll be glad you did."

As a rule, you want to stay on the busy streets and stay off the empty ones. A lot of the bars in the FQ are open until 4 or 5, but I'm good by 3. It gets especially sketchy after 3AM.

Be safe and party hard!

Party somewhere other than the Quarter. There's just too much crime in this area.

This is pretty good advice.

You're talking about walking on Bourbon Street, from Esplanade to Tropical Isles? I don't know what's so dangerous about that walk, I've made it multiple times. Obvious the basics apply - watch your surroundings, try to stay where people are, etc. And I know you can get jacked at any time if you're unlucky. But point is - I've made that walk alone and when there weren't a ton of people around, and it never felt too shady if you keep your eyes open.

Depends on how much risk you’re willing to take for a few hours of fun. There’s no debating the crime risk in the Quarter. Many locals are aware of this and avoid the Quarter as much as possible. It’s mainly a tourist thing.

That article is from 2.5 years ago. And most of that 'chaos' was the gangbanging and such, not random crime on clueless tourists (although I know it occurs).

I lived in the area for 35+ years. I could cite many instances of crime against tourists..
