Ok. "Major" is a pretty subjective term. I could see it that way or interpret it to mean regional hubs.

The right of way is in the process of being put together in South Lubbock. Hopefully, in a couple of months, I'll get to go out there and take a look at the progress. Right now, not much to look at, but over time, you'll see the feeder roads starting to take shape for construction along FM 1585.

Official word from Lubbock's TXDOT office:

TxDOT ready to present final alignment of first Loop 88 segment | Lubbock Online | Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

Funding will become available in less than four years, after which construction can begin.

I think some people are waking up. TXDOT is doing more meetings which will engage people in plans for the northwest and west segments of Loop 88.

Instead of just focusing on the 1585 segment west of U.S. 87 (which will have the final alignment presented to people soon), they're going to seek steps for the remainder of the initial plans for the partial outer belt. If only they could speed up construction. We've got so many great things going on in the West-o-plex!

Would seem like a lengthy detour from the favored 84/27/N. 289/back to 84 route (going from SE of Lubbock to NW). Maybe it makes more sense in 2040.

If only Lubbock had a freeway from the northwest heading into the Texas Tech area where Marsha Sharp is now, forming a Y, then U.S. 84 could have followed old 84 into 27 and onto 82.

By the way, the Outer Loop will still retain the State Loop 88 designation for now, from what officials have said. I still believe we can see this belt eventually go up north of town, but it likely won't be in my lifetime.

Designating the new loop as part of the federal highway system means that they can access federal funds for the project. Not a bad move, though it does suggest TxDOT wouldn’t have the funds to build the project otherwise. Since the loop is a “bypass”, the official US 84 will still be able to keep its current route through town.
