Gee, I don't know. Maybe NC wants the jobs to go to existing North Carolina unemployed-underemployed tobacco/ textile/ furniture/factory workers? Considering the fact that Toyota is getting a large incentive package by the state to make batteries in Randolph County, NC.

LOL, with an unemployment rate of 3.4% its not possible for every new hire to be an unemployed North Carolinian. And its common practice to bring in existing employees to start up a new facility like this.

Incentives aren't tied to the previous address or employment status of new hires. They are tied to hiring people who then pay taxes to the state, thus funding the incentives and more. You're barking up the wrong tree, sorry.

Complete nonsense Sparky.

No need to LOL, or apologize, to me.

The local Randolph County unemployment rate is close to 3.5% because many "employable" folks have simply dropped out of the work force due to lack of jobs, and are therefore not counted in the unemployment rate. The labor participation rate is historically low. If it were so rosy, as you claim, then why would Jim Melvin and the Carolina Core work so hard to land tenants at the so-called Mega-sites? They did a great job and are to be commended. The Triad is back and the future looks very promising.

Most companies choose to establish specific locations in order to take advantage of the local, trained non-union workforce, be it Apple, Google, Boom, Toyota etc. In fact, the local community colleges in the Triad are training future employees to work at Boom and Toyota. Johnston Community College long ago established a training facility for students to work for pharmaceutical companies. It is considered to be a national model.

Apple and Google set up shop in the Triangle ONLY because of the local pipeline of talent; incentives were important but not the deciding factor. Boom and Toyota set up shop for the same reasons. Boom and Toyota received massive incentives from the state in order to help rejuvenate the Triad economy, and it was a smart thing to do. Employing local workers in 21st century industries. Good bye tobacco, textiles, furniture. Hello to advanced aviation and EV technology.

Who is barking up the wrong tree now Sparky?

What?! That is quite the word salad, congratulations! I guess if you have nothing to say, you say a lot. You're not only barking up the wrong tree, you don't even know what a tree is, or how to bark, lol.

Obviously, the megasite and Toyota are great for NC and the Triad. And obviously we have underemployed people and people not in the labor force who will work for Toyota, etc. Just as obvious is the fact that there is no way Toyota can find 100% of their new employees locally. They will recruit lots of people from out of state and from other Toyota facilities. Thats a fact.

How long did P & G run billboards for a handful of plant jobs in Brown Summit? Paying low 20s per hour. And how many does Mr. Toyoda need? And it's a simplification to assume a 3.5% unemployment rate to be the sole cause. The overall picture is much more complex with many residents simply not looking for work. Personally, this leads to scepticism regarding the motivation altogether of the local workforce. How many men and women of working age are willing to get out of bed 5 days per week, 52 weeks per year to work an 8 hour day in an assembly plant? Sober and not stoned. And not holding a smartphone. My advice, and the advice offered to my millenial daughter with her own life? Be of honest service to an employer, work hard, be productive and be loyal to him. Some won't reciprocate, but most will. Take care of Mr. Toyoda, and Mr. Toyoda will take care of you.

I'd send a breakfast van around in the morning to the street corners with beggars and offer two destinations. The Toyota plant......or the city limits. These Egg McMuffins aren't free.

I'm still waiting for a majority of the jobs to be staffed thru a local temp agency and probably only a hand full that will be for permeant full time with benefits positions... Alot of big companies around here have an onsite temp office . where the temp worker can go talk to a temp agency rep onsite for issues such as their time and pay and any other issues.
