That's what I thought as well. You have a baked apple to have with dinner, no different than putting an apple in a pig's mouth when roasting a whole hog. I doubt it changes the flavor of anything very much, even in a chicken.

Yes , an apple cut in pieces, a onion cut in pieces, both sprinkled with rosemary, into the chicken it gives more flavor compared to a empty roasted chicken.

Yes in some old stringy fowls …

Even if it didn’t technologically do much …
Some would have the perception it softened the flavor of old chickens
Or wild birds …
