Every couple weeks or so I check into some replacement groups and check on other folks status of their replacements, checked into one today and got this one. The below person claims to be 61.

I'd love to read some good reviews if someone wants to report them.

((I had surgery scheduled for Left TKR on the 4th and have postponed it until Feb.
I have A lot of personal issues which are causing me a lot of anxiety and depression. My right TKR recovery was a nightmare and 3 yrs. later even tho I have great ROM and bend still have pain.
Reading all the stories on here reminds me what a long painful journey recovery can be with no guarantee. I’m seriously thinking of not doing it this year. I have good rom and bend but am bone and bone so some activities cause pain. ))

Here is a post from a person needing a revision and scared to death.

(((Does anyone have any experience with either allergic reactions to implants or PICCS that are used in lieu of IV needles?

Can a person continue without having another revision if one is allergic to the revised knee implant or is continuing to leave it in your body dangerous?

Other than a large discoloration on my skin and itching, I don't have any symptoms of the allergy. My knee is working pretty well. I can't get a new doctor to take my case. I think it may be because they fear getting involved in litigation since a hole was blown in my leg and a large quantity of bone cement leaked into my leg.

I have told doctors that I am not interested in suing anyone but they still won't help me. It is a real problem. Also, I have a continued pain under my armpit since they gave me a PICC because they couldn't put in the needle for an IV. At least I think the pain was caused by the PICC but not entirely sure. I had an ultrasound but nothing was seen on that test. Is there anything else that might be considered to figure out what is causing my pain? The pain goes down from my armpit to my elbow and sometimes to my wrist and middle two fingers. )))

Every time I do a search and find these reports I love my knee even more.

Robotic Assist:

(((Just got my second new knee at Mayo clinic in Jacksonville Florida. My surgeon, same one as first time, used a robotic assist. What a difference, recovery is much better, 10 days out and I have 99 degrees, last time it took me 8 weeks to get there. I highly recommend this new procedure .)))

Blood Clot Story:

(((So sorry to hear about your problem @sporti9 . You were wondering if anyone else had the same problem. Well, here I am. I never had such pain in my life! Dr said I probably pulled something when I went to see him. He would have just sent me home but I got upset and told him I am requesting a sonagram. Well, he then sent me to the lab who after exam told me to go straight to er. I have 2 blood clots right where i pointed out my pain to him. I am in such excruciating pain. Never thought this could hurt so much. I am almost 6 wks out of my tkr and feel so helpless. I was progressing so well . We just have to hang in there I guess.)))

On NOT Overdoing it Post Op:

(((This site has "saved" me - mostly from myself and my obsession with overworking my new knee which I got on May 9th. I am 59 years young, and was very active prior to the surgery - spin class twice a week, cardio every day, hiking, ice hockey, skiing, and road biking about 1000 miles a year. I was told that you have to work hard right from the start - and boy did I. I had my 6 week post op appointment with the surgeon today. I have been slow to see improvement in flexion and, to a lesser extent, extension and was beating myself up about it, with lots of crying, etc. My PT favors a gentle approach primarily working on functional movement (which I am excelling at) and told me to put away the goniometer (yes, I had bought one!). With the edict from surgeon to be at 110 degrees by today I was beside myself with worry. I was exercising incessantly with ice and elevation in between - and obviously not enough rest. About a week ago I found this site (thank you, thank you, thank you!) and also began listening to others (including my PT) who told me to back off on the exercise and allow my knee to rest and recover -- it was in a perpetual state of swelling and inflammation. I can say that over the past several days the swelling has receded some and on Saturday I was able to make a revolution on the bike while standing up, and today a full revolution seated - YIPPEE! I did not make the flexion goal for the surgeon who told me to be more aggressive with the stretching (with a "threat" of MUA if no gains in another 6 weeks) but I have made some small gains. I am probably at 95 degrees flexion comfortably with 5 extension. I will use the tips from this site on correctly using the bike for stretching (not training!) as well as the suggestions for extension and flexion. I wish I had found this site prior to my surgery and will definitely do things differently when I have the right one done. Thanks to all of the experts on here - my emotional well-being is much better knowing that I am not "abnormal" and that patience and rest will help me in the long run.))) This person is 59.

Finding these reviews and posting them gives me more to think on too, maybe.

Here's a reply to above post:

(((I wish you had found this place before your surgery, too. I found it about 6 months before mine and I had the same experience of no exercise that is written about here. I've had 11 knee surgeries and never did PT or exercises. I used my knee doing daily activities, taking care of myself and 11 cats. My knees are doing great without the stress of PT. I just used them the way God intended them to be used. Many do chose PT, but find that gentle and slow is the way to go. Aggressive PT causes inflammation, which causes swelling and then the ROM goes down. Low pain=more gain! Good luck!)))

Boy surgeons sure do give different instructions, push hard and don't push.

Knees+ and Hip- Stories From a member of another group I'm on.

(((I had good results. R knee in 2008, L in 2010. The R was so sore before that I'd stArt out to go to the store & it would hurt so much I'd turn around & go home. I think the reason I did well was doing phys ther before both to strengthen quads & following through after. L knee bothers me a bit now with what they called "patella-femoral syndrome but K-taping keeps that under control.

The left total hip in 8/15 was another story. It dislocated a month after in spite of good rehab, pt & following precautions. & started a cascade of problems that have messed up my life to this day. In retrospect, I think I should have called a lawyer after it dislocated.)))

Thought I'd add this THR Drama, and so many say no problems with these.

(((I have a hip infection for the second time in 4 years, had 4 replacements over 30 years and have been very unwell with sepsis. Also been in hospital 7 weeks on IV.

I am now home with spacer until February when hopefully another new hip will be implanted, huge doses of antibiotics and some discomfort and pain, but nothing like 4 years ago when my spacer bent.

I am managing to do most things on my crutches but get worried about my blood tests and how the future will pan out.

Any suggestions?

Has anyone else had 2 infections?)))

One Reply:

)))Hello there my friend. I started in 2013 with initial operation, everything came out for 9 months. IV antibiotics at home the entire time with spacer. Revision done 2014. Now it's got erosion, and I guess I'm looking for another surgery. A nightmare. I'm 59 and my life is so different. I'm seeing a second specialist this week, hope they will hav e some options for me. I'm also a Diabetic)))

Wonder why I can't bring myself to another surgery????

TKR Revision coming up.

Talking to my friend yesterday and a friend whom I've talked to in the last 2-3 yrs about his TKR and the pain and stiffness he lives with, well he's having a revision early next year. I'm not sure how old his TKR is but not that old. These revisions are basically like a re-do, so I hope he comes out with better results. And more painless. What so many go thru with these surgeries and then the fear of dislocation which I worry about with hip as it makes funny moves.

43 yo Male Story, cries a lot

(((Long time reader, surgery date was December 5th so I’m approaching the two week mark. I’ve read the suggested articles from other threads. After surgery I my knee was immobilized to help the wound heal and reduce potential bleeding. Ultimately had no more bleeding than normal. As a cyclist, bikes just name themselves and I found my new knee did the same. So I’ve been with Dave now for almost two weeks now. I’m on one crutch, muscles have started engaging pretty well the past four days.

I’m not sure there is anything unique with my recovery to date but below are my struggles:
1). Dr wants flexsion at 90 two days from now. I was at 72 at PT today. I want to believe give it time but the medical establishment doesn’t seem to want that. The positive is my extension is really good.

1A). My flex of 72 comes after a series of exercises, five minutes later my knee is extremely tight and I have maybe 15 degrees of useful flex. Walking very stiff legged, etc. is this stiffness “normal” for most?
2). Prior to surgery and for the past 25 years my flexsion was 90-95 degrees, Will I have the opportunity to increase my flexibility past this point? I believe I can but my PT is hinting that won’t happen. This is irritating to me, I’m a goal setter and my goal is more flexibility long term for this joint.
3). I’ve cried everyday except two since surgery, it’s almost getting comical. I feel like my life is the movie Groundhog Day. Very mentally taxing. But as a 43 year old man I would prefer this crying behavior to return to pre surgery levels of frequency sooner rather than later.
4). Sleep pattern is really crappy but I understand this is fairly normal. )))

The more I read the more I want to give Prolo and other regenerative medicine more chances.

Some of you may want to read this, it even mentioned the arthroscopy "cleanups" which they did on me are worthless, which I've been thinking all along.

Someone promoting stem cell treatment who admits that 12% of his patients go on to knee replacement. He also thinks that

"If you're a young and active individual who can't exercise hard because of knee pain and arthritis, this study shows knee replacement is not the right surgery for you. If you're an older person who has some trouble climbing stairs but can still walk the mall or a significant distance once your knee "warms up," this study also shows that knee replacement isn't for you. However, if you're someone who can't walk more than a block without severe knee pain or climb any stairs and you have failed other treatments, knee replacement may be well worth the risks."

Apparently he gets to decide which patients are so miserable that knee replacement is "well worth the risks."

His "study" of stem cell treatment used the wrong comparison group: physical therapy. It should compare to a placebo injection.

Also, cleaning infected material out of a joint is not the same as removing damaged cartilage.

https://emedicine.medscape.com/artic...8369-technique

"A retrospective review of 46 cases of septic arthritis in 46 patients found arthroscopic treatment to be indicated in all patients who have septic arthritis of native joints. Johns et al found arthroscopic treatment to be preferable to open treatment in both adult and pediatric patients with acute septic arthritis of the knee."
