Be sure the tire beads are in the "valley" of the rim, side opposite you're working on. This will give you room to get the bead over the side/edge of the rim. Some use soap, some use "tire lubricant. I use "talc." It also helps to be careful when you're prying the bead off/onto the rim. This is where "pinched" tubes happen.
