Aldi is set to buy about 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores across the Southeast in a deal with parent company Southeastern Grocers, the retailer announced Wednesday.

The acquisition includes 400 grocery stores located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi, the release said. The deal is expected to close in 2024.

Sad because they just renovated the store in North Columbus. It's time for Krogers to re-enter this market.

Hopefully we can keep out WDs. I know it saved me when looking for an open grocery store on Christmas Eve last year!

From what I can tell, at least in the short term, the Winn Dixie name isn't going anywhere. I think this is Aldi's foray into full-line grocers.

That being said, Winn-Dixie has been on a slow retreat from Columbus over the years. In the 2000s, they had 5 locations in Columbus. Now they have two.

The release that Aldi provided said that they plan to keep the Winn Dixie brand. They will only be converting stores in settings where they would believe a Aldi would be better for the market. Winn Dixie is much larger than an Aldi so I would think these would be few and far between.

The local Winn Dixie’s should be okay. They are spread out enough and away located in areas where they shouldn’t have to change to Aldi. I’m hopeful the acquisition can help with Winn Dixie prices on some items as Aldi is a lot lower in price.
