Most homeless aren’t from out of state (though CA is much higher in that regard than most other states—a previous study in LA county showed about 1 in 5 were which is much, much higher than most midwestern states) but many do migrate to the cities for services.

I posted a link before saying over 50% of homeless in SF had lived
In the city less than 10 years before becoming homeless. The majority were from surrounding counties and the Central Valley but it doesn’t mean people aren’t from elsewhere.

Sources give varying rates of addiction to illicit drugs and alcohol in the homeless population but most give rates between 20-75%. On the low end that’s still 10x+ higher than the housed population.

What’s interesting to me is I’ve travelled to literal second and third world countries. While many slum dwellers in those places live poorly, there aren’t as many unhoused people in general. The people that are living totally unhoused like here seem to be addicts or alcoholics.

One in five women who become homeless in California flee their homes to escape violence and escalating abuse by an intimate partner, a new analysis of a statewide survey has reported.

The study by the Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative at UC San Francisco found that a dearth of domestic violence shelters leaves women exposed to more violence in homeless encampments.

“That system is completely overwhelmed, and people are winding up in encampments,” said Margot Kushel, director of the research group and co-author of the report.

Among those who reported being victims of violence in the six months before losing their housing, 2 in 5 were victimized again while homeless, usually at the hands of a former partner who tracked them down.

Intimate partner violence is a precursor to homelessness, study finds:

California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta is accusing a contractor with the state’s Project Homekey homeless housing program of putting projects in jeopardy by illegally borrowing against them.

In a civil lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Bonta demands that Shangri-La Industries return more than $100 million in Project Homekey funds and asks the court to place the seven properties in receivership.

According to the complaint, Shangri-La took out loans on six of the seven properties without obtaining approval from the state or recording the required affordability restrictions on the properties. The state learned of the problem when the banks sent notices of default, and all seven properties are now at risk of foreclosure, the complaint said.

The lawsuit also names Shangri-La’s chief executive, Andy Meyers...

Los Angeles-based Shangri-La did not respond to a voicemail and email from The Times.

Of course they didn't.

Homelessness? No, it's terrible in a lot of places. Crime probably more so.

Media relies on bad news. They need a crisis.

They had a field year with COVID. Before that, it was seasonal fires, active shootings and weather phenomena. When things get "slow" in the bad news room, they sensationalize so-so news into a crisis level.

Sometimes, they get more than they need to sell "minutes" of viewership. (Advertisers love this.)

An old standby would be the MiddleEast cauldron of hate, that it is.

Homeless is just another brick in the wall.

I lived in California for 40+ years before relocating just before the pandemic.

We spent several months traveling around the western US scouting relocation candidates. Those claiming the homelessness issue is the same everywhere are either seeing what they want to see, or they haven't really explored other states.

The facts aren't up for debate: California has some of the highest rates of homelessness along with some of the highest rates of unsheltered homeless.

A good graphical representation can be found at https://mapstack.substack.com/p/home...and-trends-for The first and third maps make it very clear.

This has been well known for at least 5 years, and is readily available to those willing to look. A lot more needs to be spent on shelters, transitional housing, subsidized affordable housing, along with building a lot more market rate housing. Blaming this on the media is just a way to ignore the problem.

No. The media minimizes the issue, and people who live around "the unhoused" know it.

I distinguish between people who are actually homeless due to a life-altering situation that occurred in their lives, versus, transients who swarm our communities and are filthy, drug-addicted criminals and scum of the earth. California is a cesspool of drug-addicted, criminal transients that spend their time getting high, committing crimes and trashing, literally, our communities.

They defecate, urinate and discard their drug paraphernalia on our sidewalks, streets, in our parks, on our private property (read: our homes) and anywhere they please, and it's considered "normal" now, and "legal." Most of the transients have dogs they use to protect themselves, and they neglect and abuse the poor, defenseless animals. It's disgusting. ALL of the animals should be taken from them. The transients have made our once-safe communities and neighborhoods unsafe. Not one citizen in California should feel unsafe in our own homes, and, yet, we do now.

I believe homeless people need and deserve our help. I believe the drug-addicted, criminal transients belong in a locked State mental institution or a prison. I tend to favor prison.
