Infants who spent most of their first year in the pandemic have fewer types of bacteria in their gut than infants born earlier, according to a team of developmental psychology researchers.
The findings, published in Scientific Reports, showed that infants whose gut microbes were sampled during the pandemic had lower alpha diversity of the gut microbiome, meaning that there were fewer species of bacteria in the gut.
A healthy microbiome contains a diverse variety of microbes (bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses), which keeps our immune system working well. Changes to its diversity can make us sick.
Previous research has found that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, reduces the diversity of bacteria in the gut microbiome of people with the disease. Researchers wanted to know whether the variety of microbes present can predict how sick someone with COVID-19 may become.
In a study supported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), researchers looked at gut microbiomes in people with different severities of COVID-19. They found that the microbiome was less diverse in people with severe COVID-19 than in people who were less sick. The difference is significant enough that researchers can predict who has severe disease based on the microbes in their gut microbiome.
I think it's more likely that the hospitalized covid patients they tested had lower diversity before they contracted covid. They had more severe cases partially because of this, IMO. I remember reading some scholarly articles about this at the height of the pandemic.
They don't know what the patients' diversity was before contracting covid and being hospitalized. Sounds like they assumed the patients had higher diversity before getting sick.
He also says this:
Many critically-ill COVID-19 patients receive antibiotics. So, it's not clear if COVID-19 or antibiotic treatment causes the microbiome disruptions in these patients.
Well, we know antibiotics do that.
Having low diversity or dysbiosis when you contract covid would potentially make it more difficult for the immune system to fight off, causing a more severe case.
the bioweapon targets the gut microbiome (aka the immune system)

So Covid reduces diversity in the gut, which means practically the opposite of the thread title, "gut microbiome determines covid outcome".

looks like you left out the most important topic -- the gut bugs. did you address that? if not, start studying -- it will BLOW YOUR MIND. nothing, NOTHING is more important to one's wellness
Experimental drug that alters gut microbiome shows promise for long-COVID relief
A randomized controlled trial in Hong Kong finds that the synbiotic drug SIM01 relieves multiple symptoms of long COVID, or post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS).
SIM01 contains strains of anaerobic Bifidobacterium bacteria (which are probiotics) and soluble fibers (prebiotics) to alter the gut microbiome and possibly modify immune response.
