It's spelled "Hooah", and it does NOT mean "yessir!" Using it in place of "yessir" could be taken as disrespect.

It's an annoying phrase uttered by folks who don't have anything to add to a conversation but want to exhibit some sort of enthusiasm. Got real popular from the 1980s forward, to my everlasting frustration.

I can't recall seeing 'woah' used, or if I have I probably figured it was a typo. If it's becoming more popular then I'd guess it has to do with auto correct/spell check with texting and emails.

Either way it all comes down to Keanu "Ted" Reeves. Interesting that in this link the only usage of 'woah' is in the article's title, but throughout it's written 'whoa'.

Look it up. Origin and exact meaning is disputed. Not going to argue your exact point about disrespect.

Spoiler
Personally, I've always wondered if part of the reason the word/term was popular is because it is SO close in pronunciation to "hoo-ha," used as an epithet.

I use Whoa, as wait, slow down, usually in conversation, or like Wow, unbelievable.

Guess I'm wrong
