Overall the 90's. It was still the NES 8-bit era in the beginning with some great games still being released, and then the N64/PS1 64-bit era at the end with some of the best games of all time, and in the middle was Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis with iconic games like the original Sonic the Hedgehog series.
Def 81-90 ------ In my opinion games (And alot of things) goto crap in the late 80s!!
Imo some of the best games of all time came out in 1986-1990 for the NES, like Super Mario Bros. 1-3, Zelda I & II, Castlevania I-III, Mega Man 2 and 3, Ninja Gaiden I & II, Double Dragon I-III, and so many others.
I was playing Delta Force in the late 90s but due to my budget I was on Dial-up at the time and those that were on broadband were annihilating the ones on dial-up so that was not much fun.
Playing Rainbow6 online, especially R6 3:Raven Shield around 2003-2006 was the absolute most fun especially playing with other members of the group that we formed after playing with each other on the same few popular public servers first.
Good old days...
I left that online group and shortly after quit online gaming and switched to single player games until I started playing Rainbow6 Under Siege 6 years ago and then Fallout 76 a few years ago.
As a Gen X'er born in 1970 - the 80s hold such a huge warm spot for me. Albeit I feel like it's such a different time - while the console started w/ Atari 2600, then Colecovision and even the Sega Genesis really came out in 1989 (but I would consider that more a 90's era), video games were mainly driven by the Arcades. And from that perspective, the nostalgia isn't just about the games, but the environment itself. Being in those arcades - essentially the Vegas casinos for kids. The sounds, lights, smell of cigarettes, etc.
Outside of that - I agree that the 90's is where you have a combination of that "feel" and technology. While no match for the graphics/play of today - just having everyone over to play Madden, the LAN parties, or just turning your work SOC into a CounterStrike arena is hard to beat.
Notice I'm using the metric version of decade, so I can have 2020 be the end instead of creating a one year decade option.
So this goes back to as far back as pong, arcade and floppy disk computers all the way to the present where digital releases and 4K gaming are prominent. Which decade would you consider the best?
I chose 2001-2010 I was a beta tester for sims online during the early 2000's. I enjoyed it so much, and continued to play Sims for years. I hated when they discontinued it! I played Farmville for a couple of years online afte that....and that disappeared too. I haven't played anything else online in years.
I agree with this. Many of us adults with families/kids don't have hours to spend on a game. When I have 15-20 minutes, I'll go back to Super Mario Brothers 1/2/3, F-Zero, Mario Kart, or other old NES/SNES games just to relax. I still enjoy longer games occasionally when I have the time, but sometimes they just take too much time and energy. Something like Jackal, Mario Kart, or Final Fight are easy ones to play with a family member who knows nothing about video games.
If I had to pick any 10 year span it'd probably be this one. There were some games in the first half of the 2000's that set the stage for what people play today. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Counter-Strike. This really helped online multiplayer shooter games take off.
All within 5 years you had Call of Duty, SOCOM U.S. Navy Seals, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, Return to Caste Wolfenstein, God of War, Halo, World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy X, Guitar Hero, and the Madden NFL series started really getting popular.
This was along with some of the other ones already created by this time such as Doom, Unreal Tournament, Grand Theft Auto, Everquest, Myst, The Sims, and the Elder Scrolls. Really besides some better graphics and gameplay, what revolutionary innovations have taken place in the last 5-10 years?
I was a semi-pro shooter player back in the mid-2000s. Played at QuakeCon in 2004 and 2005. I was also big in UT2K3/2K4 back then. I'll fire up in an instagib Quake III every now and then.
That was a huge decade.
