My husband will be retiring in a couple years and we are contemplating moving to St. Pete from Sarasota where we now live. We mostly just want a change of scene. We are not interesting in the overpriced small homes that are near downtown in "historic" areas, we want a nice neighborhood with a concrete block stucco home, preferably mid century. I really like the convenience and looks of the far south St. Pete area, Pinellas Point and other nearby neighborhoods, also Boyd Hill Preserve area. Wondering if anyone has thoughts on these areas. Are they quiet and safe? Anything in particular I should be wary of? Right now we are just looking and thinking about it but want to do some research ahead of time. Thanks in advance!

I think you know St. Pete better than most of us. From my memory of past posts of S. St. Pete -little shopping- have to drive through bad area to get downtown. kind out of the way. I liked Disston Heights, same era and type homes your asking about , safe area, shopping, restaurants (Mazzoro's), no evacuate zone.

Thanks, Dave. We like Disston Heights, also. We will definitely want to buy in a "non flood" zone We don't mind "diverse" areas, as long as they are quiet as safe.

I live in Disston Heights. Very convenient location being about half way between the beach and downtown and near the interstate. If I recall correctly, the highest elevation in St. Pete is Disston Heights.

I have to sadly admit that they are definitely not in 'no flood zones,' but I'm in love with Gulfport and adjacent Pasadena.

Not sure what Northeast park is, but we are not in love with Gulfport or Pasadena. At any rate, I'm not sure anymore if we will buy in St. Pete or not. We have gone back and forth about it for several years, and properties have gotten really expensive even in the "less popular" type neighborhoods. I saw a beautiful home I loved in South St. Pete and it was snapped up in a matter of days. Same with another little house we looked at in Disston Heights. Of course the same is happening here where I live in Sarasota. If one has upwards of a half mil to spend, it's no problem. Its trying to find something you like that is well under $300,000. I can't believe it but even the ghetto in Sarasota has gone way up in price! I imagine that will happen in St. Pete eventually due to the great location.

Oh well, we have plenty of time to look, think and decide. Thanks for your thoughts, everyone.

I'm guessing Northeast Park is probably Old Northeast. Have you checked in Kenwood? That's another great area.

Problem with many places close to downtown, including Kenwood, is the prices, if you are looking under $300K its a challenge more and more. There are still homes out there though. Just have to keep looking as there are lots of decent neighborhoods in south county.

I literally just bought a house in the upper regions of Kenwood. Super excited! You have to act quick around here tho. If you see something pop up that interests you in the slightest, you (and your realtor) must be ready to view it asap. Mine was up for 3 days, and luckily I was the first offer, but if I hadn't acted, there were a number of showings scheduled later on that day and the next.
