I'm brand new here & am having trouble locating a lap pool for adult swimming in Panama City. I'm near the downtown area.

If I search for lap pools/swimming online I find a lot of pool companies, not clubs/fitness centers where I can swim. Also, I know a lot of businesses were destroyed & never built back up after Hurricane Michael, so am surprised that in driving around I've seen a fair number of businesses that have not reopened (including that huge mall a couple of streets over)... so, maybe there were fitness centers with pools in PC, but no longer? I also can't find a Y nearby.

What I'm looking for is something akin to the Aquatic Center in PCBeach, but that's at least a 35+ min drive each way & I need something closer for it not to become a commuting chore in addition to costing a couple of gallons of gas for each visit. If there's nothing else, I could just go once/wk on a day off as a drop-in, but it's not convenient & I'm usually a 3-times/wk swimmer, so it's a bummer.

The irony is I moved here from Iowa where there was a Y I could walk to, but... the pool was never open once in 2-yrs time as they didn't have a lifeguard on staff. I assumed there'd be so many pools here, I'd have trouble deciding which one to go to.

My alternative is to just do yoga & exercise at home & buy a used Nordic Track ski machine (my small apt complex doesn't have a fitness center) as I'm in an area with no sidewalks so also need to drive 30-min to the nearest trail/park for walking... St. Andrews I was told. I can drive a couple of miles away to Harrison Ave near that gov't bldg to park for free for 2-hrs & walk around... there are sidewalks, but it's not really enough of a walk for me.

Am I missing something? Where do you nearby locals go for walking, swimming? BTW, I'm not paranoid & am careful, but I'm a small girl, so am not looking for an off-road, wooded or remote location for anything. Once I get settled & have some friends to do physical activities with, I can open up my exercise opportunities & find a hiking group.

Thank you.

Default Update...

Okay, thanks. It seems going local is better... I joined NextDoor dot com to get a reply & it's more helpful... just an FYI for those looking for local finds.

For anyone in the same area, sadly, driving to PCB is the only way to find lap swimming pools.

TY all. Happy Easter!
