SRQ nears final approval for commercial development

One more City Commission vote remains in the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport's quest to win rezoning to build revenue-producing properties.

For full article:

Building more parking to accommodate the growth requires revenue, which is why the airport is working to clear the way for construction of light commercial space along University Parkway, among other passenger service projects, to enhance income.

“Everything south of rental car road is part of the SRQ Gateway Center, and what we've tried to do there is to set the stage for these parcels to be leased out long-term to various commercial tenants,” Bailey said. "Unfortunately, because we've had such a surge in air traffic since the pandemic lifted, we've had to hijack some of those spots and use them for parking. Eventually we hope to be able to reconvert them after we maybe build a parking garage.”

In addition to more parking and consolidating rental car storage and maintenance operations onto one site along Rental Car Road, the airport is planning 171,250 square feet of office space, a 150-seat restaurant and 300 hotel rooms.

Legacy Trail advocates eye linking with Florida Gulf Coast Trail

Expanded systems could connect Tampa, Naples

For full article:

https://www.mysuncoast.com/2023/10/1...outputType=amp

The Legacy Trail continues to grow, in size and in popularity, with construction on overpasses across Bee Ridge Road and Clark Road scheduled to start later this year.

In the last 12 months, more than 660,000 bikers, joggers and rollerbladers have spent time on the trail, which stretches mainly along former railway corridors from downtown Sarasota to Venice.

And, if supporters can help pull it off, the trail could eventually be linked to the Florida Gulf Coast Trail, with routes that would connect Tampa to Naples.

It doesn’t have to end there, says Charles Hines, of the Trust for Public Lands. “Ultimately, the goal to be able to travel all throughout the state of Florida.”

The Trust for Public Lands is leading efforts to complete the Florida Gulf Coast Trail, a 336-mile-long corridor through seven Gulf Coast counties — Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee and Collier.

The challenge, he says, is connecting existing trails with each other. Unfortunately, there’s still large segments that have to be built. And that’s where Trust for Public Land brings in our expertise,” to assist with land acquisition issues.

Sarasota County is already incorporating the Legacy Trail expansion in plans for the new nature park at the Bobby Jones Golf Course and the soon-to-be-renovated 17th Street Park, all the way to Nathan Benderson Park.

“What makes this so exciting and so feasible is there’s no land acquisition,” Hines said, which is often the most expensive piece of building a trail. “This is publicly owned land and there’s publicly owned right-of-way.”

Once the trail gets to Nathan Benderson Park, a bridge over I-75 will make the connection to existing trails in Manatee County. “That is in design right now. So that’ll happen,” Hines said.

Benderson seeking to construct hotel up to 85 feet tall in Siesta Village, if County Commission will eliminate residential density restrictions for ‘transient accommodations’

County Commission to be asked to allow Planning staff to process proposed ‘out-of-cycle’ amendments from Benderson and owner of Siesta site slated for 112-room hotel

Benderson Development Co. of University Park has indicated a desire to construct a hotel up to 85 feet in height on property it owns in Siesta Key Village, as detailed in materials that one of its representatives has submitted to the Sarasota County Planning and Development Services Department staff, The Sarasota News Leader has learned.

The information is included in an Oct. 2 letter that also proposes amendments to the county’s Comprehensive Plan and Unified Development Code (UDC) — which contains all of the zoning and land-use regulations — that would eliminate the counting of hotel rooms for residential density purposes on property zoned Commercial General and Commercial Intensive in the Siesta Key Overlay District (SKOD).

“Transient accommodations” is the county term for hotel and motel rooms.

Based on the affordable definition of 30% of income utilized for housing - area police are among those that need affordable housing.

Salary negotiations stall as Venice Police ranked lowest paid in the region

For full article:

Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 57, citing recent salary increases elsewhere that pushed Venice police officers to the lowest paid in the region, is seeking a pay increase. Negotiations proved fruitless prior to the Oct. 1 start of the budget year but may resume in November.

“We went in asking more than average and we’ve come down to right around average for Sarasota County law enforcement agencies – that’s not including state agencies because those people don’t necessarily live in the court where most of our officers do,” Shope said, of this year's negotiations.

Longboat Key added 29.7% to its pay structure, while Sarasota County added more than $10,000 to the pay rate and North Port, which uses a merit and performance-based schedule, added $10,000 to its starting salary.

The base wage for a new hire in the Venice Police Department is $53,332, roughly $10,000 less than other law enforcement agencies in Sarasota County.

Sarasota Police officers start at $63,135 as of that department’s new contract; North Port, $63,550; Longboat Key $63,949; and Sarasota County Sheriff’s deputies start at $75,457.

The top rate for a Sarasota Police officer is $97,209; $95,113 for Sheriff's deputies; North Port officers top out at $90,090; Longboat Key officers at $87,518; and Venice Police at $80,388.

Preserving Sarasota's old homes can protect our city's true character

For full article:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/real...01212881&ei=20

Earlier this month, the Sarasota City Commission – following the 4-0 lead of the Historic Preservation Board – voted (unanimously!) to stay for six months the potential demolition of the historic McAlpin house, built in 1912 at 1530 Cross Street. The commission recommended Orange Pineapple LLC, which plans a mixed-use residential development for the roughly 3-acre parcel near Burns Court, use the time to consider how to incorporate the home into its design or continue to explore moving it.

Another promising sign comes in the form of the SAHP’s new historic loan program, which provide loans to homeowners in the Central Cocoanut and Newtown districts to protect the structural integrity of their homes’ exteriors and discourage them from selling out to developers. (The Central Cocoanut neighborhood is already a nationally designated “historic district” and the same designation is imminent for the nearly 700 contributing structures in the Newtown neighborhood.)

A Look Inside Rumble’s Longboat Key Headquarters

Interior designer Keffie Lancaster discusses her work inside the offices of the video streaming platform favored by conservatives.

Right-wing fortress or freedom of speech haven? However you see the headquarters of Rumble, an online video streaming platform that recently made its U.S. home on Longboat Key, it’ll probably be from outside. It’s not the kind of place that takes walk-ins. Due to the nature of the politically charged media it produces, the general public can’t just waltz in.

Founded in Toronto, Canada, where chief executive officer Chris Pavlovski still lives, Rumble made a lot of noise when it came to town. If you don’t know about the platform, it’s often described as a right-wing alternative to YouTube, and in fact, an interior mural depicts a comic-style boxing match between the two platforms.

Pavlovski’s family owns property in Venice, and he owns a home on Siesta Key. He founded the company in 2013, and it grew in popularity after Google (which owns YouTube), Facebook (now Meta) and X (formerly known as Twitter) were criticized by conservatives for allegedly suppressing right-leaning content. Today, Rumble hosts millions of content creators and has exclusive rights to livestream the ongoing Republican presidential debates.

Extreme drought continues for the Suncoast - But for how long?

https://www.mysuncoast.com/2023/10/2...outputType=amp

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - It’s dry. At SRQ we’re 1.48″ below normal rain for October, 21.49″ below normal rain for the year. There’s no rain in sight through the end of October. Computer models are showing signs that some light rain may be possible in early November, but even that is questionable. Until then, a large ridge of High Pressure in the upper atmosphere is keeping the Suncoast, the southeastern U.S. and the Gulf of Mexico free of any significant storms.

El Niño in Florida can mean rainy, cool dry season, but climate change may blunt the chill

For full article:

https://news.yahoo.com/el-ni-o-flori...091149382.html

It was shy at first, unsure of its footing in the tepidly warm waters of the equatorial Pacific Ocean, but El Niño has matured since its June awakening and could rival the strongest events on record through winter.

The periodic climate pattern has traditionally meant cooler, stormier and wetter winters for Florida as it muscles the jet stream into lower latitudes across the southern reaches of the United States.

This winter, El Niño has a 95% chance of remaining steadfast through March, and a 71% chance of being a strong event that may spur tornadoes, bloat Lake Okeechobee and blunt the sun during the darkest days of the year.
