One of Sarasota's oldest and most beloved restaurants, which opened during the 1950s when the likes of Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe were the biggest stars of the day, has permanently closed after 67 years in business.

Hob Nob Drive-In, occupying a prominent spot on U.S. 301 just north of downtown Sarasota, served its final burger and fries this week. The owners of the legendary burger joint had planned to continue serving customers through today, May 15, but they ran out of food around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

When I visited Wednesday morning, the owners and a small crew were already breaking a sweat in the Florida heat, dismantling the open-air restaurant that has served generations of Sarasotans.

"Yeah, we're closing," said owner Cary Spicuzza, his voice tinged with sadness. He wore blue jeans, a ballcap, and a long-sleeve button-down work shirt emblazoned with the iconic red, black, and white logo of the Hob Nob Drive-In, which no longer operates at 1701 N. Washington Blvd.

Spicuzza owns Hob Nob with his wife, Debora Spicuzza, and their business partner, Annette Gargett, who was also there working on Wednesday morning. He said they might open a Hob Nob food truck "next fall or winter," which would be run by Gargett on an adjacent property, but that the Hob Nob restaurant has permanently closed. The Spicuzzas and Gargett own multiple properties surrounding Hob Nob, but not the actual Hob Nob property, which is owned by Petros Karras. Cary Spicuzza said their lease ends on June 30.

"Ever since COVID, the restaurant business has changed," Spicuzza said while seated at one of the tables that has likely been covered with thousands of burgers over the years. "The challenges you face are a little more insurmountable."

Spicuzza noted the difficulty in finding capable kitchen workers and mentioned that most days he manned the grill himself. He also pointed to a decline in business as one of the reasons for closing.

"We've been here since Nov. 7, 1991, and this past summer was the first time I lost money — we usually break even during the summer (with our biggest profits coming during the winter tourist season)," Spicuzza said. "I'm 67, and my wife and Annette (Gargett) are in their 60s; it's time to stop and smell the roses."

The Dakin Dairy Farm in Manatee County sold to the next generation of dairymen

Jerry Dakin's dairy is staying in the family, and the Manatee County staple has been sold to his four nephews.

The dairy has been in the community for decades, and that will continue now that it has passed on to the next generation of Dakin family dairymen, Jason, Garrett, Grant and Ethan.

The four brothers took over operations at the facility on May 1. It is the third property under their direct ownership across Manatee and DeSoto counties.

"We've been in the dairy business since we were kids, it's our passion," Grant Dakin said. "We were born and raised on the farm. It made us who we are today."

Former owner Jerry Dakin — who was named Florida Farmer of the Year in 2021 — is now focusing on a compost business called Dakin Natural Soils. He still spends much of his time at the dairy, helping with operations and providing tutelage.

"Crying, yelling, screaming and cursing, we've gone through it all," Jerry said. "When we bought it, all we had was fencing and the little house up there. The fence is gone but the house is still there. It's been a total change to be here and build the plant, and it will be a great thing to see my nephews take it to the next level."

"That looks like new AI technology, it looks like new products and higher qualities," he said. "It's them creating new markets. They have so much more volume of milk that they have a big opportunity to expand."

The four brothers learned about the dairy business from their father, Cameron, and their uncles Jerry and the late Farren — who learned how to farm from their own father Pete.

In all, the Dakin family owns about 5,000 cows, and purchase of Dakin Dairy gives the four men an opportunity to produce milk and milk products from start to finish. The dairy currently produces fluid milk, flavored milk, heavy cream, and buttermilk that is sold statewide. A contractor also produces cheese products at the dairy as well.

"This facility has a plant, that's something we didn't already have," Grant said. "We've been selling to a co-op, so owning a plant gives us an opportunity to be self sufficient. We've never been in the bottling side of this, this has always been my uncle's thing."

Grant said they are proud to continue the family legacy and to do their part to protect some of Manatee County's agricultural lands from development.

Another themed private pay adult day care center for seniors opened with fanfare Thursday in Sarasota. More than 200 gathered for the opening event at the new flagship location for ActivAge on Bee Ridge Road.

The facility is styled as a "day-cation" care club to provide a fun, colorful, and lively environment for seniors. The adult day center model is a trend growing across the country as baby boomers make up the population of seniors and millennials start to navigate adult care for their parents.

Which Sarasota, Manatee surgery surgery centers earn high-performing marks with new ratings?

For full article:

Five local surgery centers – two in Sarasota County, one in Bradenton and two in Charlotte County− earned high performing ratings in the first rankings by U.S. News & World Report of the Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers in the United States.

The rankings were released online May 14. Other rankings routinely released by U.S. News & World Report include the nation's best hospitals, best nursing homes and best high schools.

U.S. News & World Report, along with CareJourney, an Arlington, Virginia-based healthcare analytic firm, ranked almost 5,000 ambulatory surgery centers in four separate specialty areas: colonoscopy & endoscopy, ophthalmology, orthopedics & spine and urology, awarding a total of 717 high performing ratings.

U.S. News said that it developed the consumer-centered ratings to help patients – along with their health care providers – identify high-quality sites for common same-day diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.
Fewer than 15% of evaluated facilities earned a “High Performing” rating.

What local ambulatory surgery centers ranked the highest?

The Surgery Center at Pointe West, East Center, 6015 Pointe West Boulevard, Bradenton, earned a high-performing ranking in Orthopedics and Spine surgery, as did Premier Surgery Center of Sarasota, 983 S. Beneva Road, Sarasota.

The Center for Endoscopy-Sarasota, 3325 S. Tamiami Trail, earned a high-performing ranking in Colonoscopy and Endoscopy procedures.

In all, U.S. News & World Report analyzed the performance of 12 ambulatory surgery centers in Sarasota, eight in Bradenton and three in Venice.

It also analyzed four centers in Charlotte County – two of which received high-performing rankings as well: the Charlotte Endoscopic Surgery Center in Colonoscopy and Endoscopy procedures; and Surgery Center of Port Charlotte in Orthopedic and Spine surgery. Both are located at 23970 Suncoast Blvd., Port Charlotte.

Beginning June 1, Florida insurance companies will need to purchase re-insurance for the upcoming hurricane season and a warning, that it's not going to be cheap.
Citizens aims to buy $5.5B in reinsurance to back up claims ahead of hurricane season

With hurricane season just over two weeks away, Citizens Property Insurance’s Board of Governors met to discuss a new requirement that aims to cut down on risk.

Reinsurance is “insurance for insurance companies.” In Citizens’ case, it ensures the state’s insurer of last resort will be able to pay out their claims if disaster strikes.

This comes a year after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said the company “is not solvent” and implied consumers should “knock on wood,” hoping a major hurricane wouldn’t collapse the market.

According to a report from NBC affiliate WBBH, the Board of Governors said the company will not pay more than $750 million for $5.5 billion in coverage. If the company ends up paying that $750 million, customers’ rates should not go up.

Citizens CFO Jennifer Montero made it clear the company won’t pay above market rate for reinsurance, saying, “we have walked away before and I think the market knows that.”

The board worries they may have prematurely shown their hand by revealing how much the company is willing to spend.

“It’s hard to negotiate or play a poker game when you’re showing people your poker hand,” board member Carlos Beruff said, according to WBBH.

When WBBH asked Friedlander if he thought $5.5 billion was sufficient to cover Citizens, he said “private insurers would probably face a ratings downgrade if they made that decision.”

In a situation where claims exceed Citizens’ reserves, Friedlander warned that the citizens of Florida themselves could be on the hook through a so-called “hurricane tax.”

According to the company’s 2023 annual statement, Citizens has $17.8 billion in reserve on top of the potential $5.5 billion in reinsurance.

Earlier this year, Citizens CEO Tim Cerio said that the company should shrink as Florida’s insurance market becomes healthier. Mark Friedlander with the Insurance Information Institute told WBBH that isn’t happening.

Other companies continue to pass off their customers to the insurer of last resort, which has racked up nearly 1.2 million policyholders.

“They’re actually growing again,” Friedlander told WBBH.
